A part of the prologue of the Casina which apparently records the play's reperformance sometime a... more A part of the prologue of the Casina which apparently records the play's reperformance sometime after Plautus' lifetime has been universally classified as a post-Plautine interpolation. Closer inspection, however, reveals not only a system of imagery throughout the prologue, but also its numerous thematically relevant correspondences with the imagery and the plot of the play. The correspondences are read as metapoetic allusions to the play's revival and attributed to a single author, with the hypothesis that it might be Plautus himself. The "revival" prologue is interpreted as Plautus' humorous anticipation of the reception of one of his last plays and the afterlife of his comic legacy.

In Serbian secondary education, classical languages are part of the traditional and uniform school curricula, within which the vast majority of the same subjects have been mandatory since at least the late 1980s. Despite individual revisions or attempts at educational reforms since the early 2000s, high school teaching practice of classical languages has not sufficiently progressed in terms of focus and methodology. The presentation below will be accompanied by some of the findings from responses by fifty-seven high school Latin teachers to a survey conducted in September 2023. Since Greek is mostly a separate case, it is best addressed individually. On the university level, classical languages are studied as the mandatory component of classical philology and as more or less elective at various other programs (Romance Languages, History, Archaeology, etc.)

This essay explores the bodily fluids imagery in Aeschylus’ Oresteia as a metaphor for the dynamics of crime and retribution, starting from one scene in the Choephoroe. Upon hearing of Orestes’ reported death, his nurse Cilissa starts recalling his infancy; among other things, washing his diapers. Such a graphic detail at such a climactic moment commands attention, especially since it recalls Clytemnestra dreaming a snake-Orestes in diapers. Throughout the trilogy, circulation of liquids within and outside the body manifests the cycle of life (wetness) and death (dryness): libations compensate for bloodshed, dust absorbs blood, war casualties are returned as dusty ashes in “urns,” referred to by the same word elsewhere used for Agamemnon’s bathtub. By contrast, it is murderous fluids that desiccate: Erinyes drip gory ooze to parch Orestes and sterilize the soil with poisonous rain, and, like Orestes, they are associated with the language of “spitting;” retribution is imaged as bodily discharge. Baby Orestes in Cilissa’s speech is the circular conductor of fluids: as he brings death to the one who gave him life, feeding him milk and cleaning his diapers converge (Choephoroe 760). Symptomatically, the nurse specifies that the process is beyond his control: babies cannot signal hunger, thirst, or full bladder. Infant metabolism, a closed loop stimulated by reflexes, symbolizes the emblematic vicious cycle of the Oresteia: the doer must suffer.

This paper identifies and analyzes several related, thematically significant tragedic resonances ... more This paper identifies and analyzes several related, thematically significant tragedic resonances in Aristophanes’ Assemblywomen as exemplifying his shift from outright paratragedy to appropriation. His treatment of politicized gender and sexual tensions owes much both to Orestes-plays (Praxagora emerges as a comic Clytemnestra; the three old women as Erinyes) and to Sophocles’ Oedipus at Colonus. The abduction scene in Aristophanes is modeled on abduction of Oedipus, which elucidates the comedian’s attitude towards Sophocles.

The formula indicta causa is a technical legal term meaning “in the absence of the speech of the ... more The formula indicta causa is a technical legal term meaning “in the absence of the speech of the defense.” This paper proposes additional meanings of the phrase in Livy 1.51.9. Elsewhere in his work Livy thematically activates the morphology of the adjective indictus; frequent occurrences of both negations and forms of dicere are a discreet commentary on the ethical implications of judicial procedure in which the defense does not have (in-) the chance to address the court (dicere). In 1.49-52, however, the dominant imagery associated with Tarquin the Proud is of literal and figurative “imposition,” and the more recurrent prefix is the directional in-, not negational. This study argues in detail that the alternative, but not mutually exclusive, derivation of adjective indicta from the verb indicere considerably enriches literary interpretation of 1.49-52.
