In contrast to uncoated glass cells where the wall relaxation times are unpredictable and usually only a few tens of seconds, the relaxation time of r2gXe in siliconecoated cells is usually 20 minutes or longer.

The dye laser is pumped by a 4-kHz 2--6 mJ/pulse copper vapor laser. The total efficiency of the dye laser (oscillator and amplifier) is 45% for rhodamine 6G and 30% for rhodamine B.

The absorption spectrum of the dye dissolved in ethanol has a large peak centered at 744 nm. The fluorescence exhibits a Stokes shift of approximately 36 nm with a lifetime of 1.7 +/- 0.3 ns. For dye laser pumping at 587 nm the laser threshold was 0.3 mJ, and the slope efficiency was 22% at the central lasing wavelength of 807 nm. The effect of various loss mechanisms is also discussed.

The apparatus is compact and accurate due to the use of a telescope to focus the beam. Incorporation of a Fabry-Perot etalon permits focusing and in situ calibration. Measurement of single-pulse beam divergence is performed with a CCTV system which includes a video tape recorder.

The dye laser consists of a Hansch-type oscillator and a simple efficient amplifier. The spectral bandwidth is 0.06 cm-'. The oscillator efficiency saturates at 16%, the amplifier efficiency at 40%, and the total system efficiency reaches 30% for a total pump energy of 6 mJ.

Predictive data mining techniques are applied to a multi-year set of manufacturing data with the purpose of reducing the variation of a crystal manufacturing process, which suffers from frequent fluctuations of the average outgoing yield. Our study is focused on specific defects that are the most common causes for scraping a manufactured crystal. A set of probabilistic rules explaining the likelihood of each defect as a function of interaction between the controllable variables are induced using the single-target and the multitarget Information Network algorithms. The rules clearly define the worst and the best conditions for the manufacturing process, also providing a complete explanation of all major fluctuations in the outgoing quality observed over the recent years. In addition, we show that an early detection of nearly the same predictive model was possible almost two years before the end of the data collection period, which could save many of the flawed crystals. The paper provides a detailed description of the optimization process, including the decisions taken at various stages and their outcomes. Conclusions applicable to similar engineering tasks are also outlined.

Wikis offer a user-friendly environment that enhances informal knowledge sharing and the collaborative creation of new knowledge. Enterprise-wide adoption of Wikis promotes the reuse of existing know-hows and prevents employee re-invention of the wheel. Four cases of successful implementations of Wikis in large, hi-tech global organizations are described in detail including their goals, design considerations, implementation and actual use for formal and informal knowledge creation and sharing. The adoption and long-term sustainability of Wikis is attributed to perceived business outcomes by managers and to perceived usefulness and ease of use by individual contributors and users. Good practices based on one or more of these use-cases can provide practical guidance to organizations that wish to use a Wiki for KM purposes.

In the introduction to his famous article Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants, Marc Prensky (2001) noted that "Our students have changed radically. Today's students are no longer the people our educational system was designed to teach" (bold typeface in the original). Furthermore, he stated that "because the single biggest problem facing education today is that our Digital Immigrant instructors, who speak an outdated language (that of the pre-digital age), are struggling to teach a population that speaks an entirely new language." Four years later Prensky (2005) suggested that "Students want and deserve to receive this content through 21st century tools that are powerful, programmable, and customizable--through tools that belong to them. We could offer this content to them on their cell phones, for example." Integrating networking technology into classes can be ...

ABSTRACT A systematic study of the 591.5 nm 238U lineshape of saturation absorption spectroscopy,... more ABSTRACT A systematic study of the 591.5 nm 238U lineshape of saturation absorption spectroscopy, including velocity changing collisions, was performed. The results indicate that for a light-mass perturber (He) the lineshape is composed of an exponential superimposed on a Gaussian background. For a heavy-mass atom perturber (Xe) the lineshape is a Lorentzian superimposed on a Gaussian background. In both cases the background Gaussian width is narrower than the Doppler width and its relative amplitude depends on the perturber's pressure. A comprehensive theoretical model, which takes into account both weak and strong collisions, is outlined. The model predicts the two types of lineshape and the agreement with the experimental results is excellent.

Amplifier ASE is eliminated by relative lengthening of the oscillator pulse. The amplifier output beam diverges less than the input beam and its temporal shape is smooth while the oscillator beam contains three prominent peaks.
