_12:00 am_[folkhero] Interview with John from the Rogue Hero Interview with John McConell of The Rogue Hero For the last two years John McConnell has called the Rogue Hero his home and base of operations. He’s a great guy who loves to wrestle around, throw back a drink and laugh with his friends. While I enjoy his friendship I’m still pissed at him for ripping my favorite Green Jacket J Here’s what John had to say in our interview: ( InterviewCollapse ) (Comment on this)

_8:11 pm_[folkhero] Gnosis and Sandwiches It all started with food- it usually does. I had stopped in to Kendrick’s Pool Hall the other day to get one of their famous panini sandwiches. That’s when I met Brian, - a young man with vision and dream. I didn’t know this yet mind you- I still hadn’t ordered my sandwich. Brian is a real friendly guy, one of those ultra charismatic types so it wasn’t long before he was sitting right next to me at the sandwich bar and chatting up a storm. We had a great dialogue ranging from the merits of institutions in society to the merits of eminiem in society. While I didn’t agree with all of Brian’s points I was really struck by his openness to listen and his thought process which I found quite refreshingly reasonable and focused. Which leads me to a discussion of his band, y’see this Brian guy has a little reggae band called Gnosis and they were playing that coming Thursday. I am not usually into reggae but this fellah had impressed me enough that I thought it was at least worth a shot- especially considering how much thought he had put into his place in the history of music, the progress of their bands acceptance, and the challenges of producing a music that was to bridge and cross the canyons of traditional music genre. On the other hand- it WAS reggae, am I ready for this? Along came Thursday and so with it along stumbled Dale into the Wild Buffalo. What I heard next had truly changed my view of reggae. Gnosis produced a truly textured sound that really played with the ear. And when I say played I mean teased… like a young girl in a mini skirt Gnosis some how kept leading me on and making me crave more. The five piece band was joined by a few guests in the evening, and yet some how never seemed to stray from their tight well rehearsed sound. I found that Gnosis’s music served me through my different moods in the evening, some of their songs played to the background and created a totally haunting, beautiful mood. Other songs were much more obvious and confronting grabbing my attention like an ambulance in the rear view mirror- an ambulance of reggae. Even when the band moved into the impromptu sessions mimicking a jazz band they stayed so tight and flowed so well- lead was handed off in this band from song to song and part to part, but again the music wove so tightly together there was no question as to who was leading at the time- the baton kept passing in this marathon but the band kept running- it was a marathon of reggae (over kill?) I had a great time listening to Gnosis. Their lyrics were intelligent, their timing was tight and their sound was crisp and clear, all the while being able to convey the genre breaking rhythms and well woven thread of their sound. I only wish that I had the new camera BEFORE I took these photos- you’ll find that Gnosis is not quite as pixilated in person. Oh, and that sandwich? Damn good- no wonder they’re famous. _12:45 pm_[folkhero] Prefunk Review: Wing Dome's Monday Night Special Recently I had the opportunity to check out the Wing Dome on a Monday night. Walking into the joint I could see it was going to be crowded as heck. We had a lot of people with us and it just seemed there would be no way to get everybody in the joint. I was a little bummed and thought we would have to leave but our waiter quickly remedied that problem by grabbing a table out of the back office clearing it of a computer and a bunch of papers and attaching it to two tables that were clear- not too shabby. The first thing that got my attention was the food special, on Monday nights you can get Buffalo wings at 39 cents a piece! That's damn good- especially because these wings are not the scrawny skinny Buffalo wings that you might find in some joints. These are quality wings and drummets with a lot of meat on the bone. This is indicative of good quality chickens being feed good quality growth hormones. The second thing that caught my attention, and believe me- this REALLY caught my attention was the beverage deal that they had to offer: Four rolling rock bottles in an ice bucket for five bucks. Folks- that's just damn tasty because we all know that ice cold beer goes really well with spicy wings! The service was nice and friendly, if not a bit slow- JD confided that they were a server down and it seemed as if the night was suffering because of it. The wings were very flavorful, I had a chance to try a "2" rated hot wing, and a "3" rated hot wing and a Jamaican wing. I will tell you that the 2 and 3 wings are barely spicy at all. If you’re looking for a mild zip you might find it in a 3 but I would recommend a 4 or a 5. My pal Jensen ordered a 7, their hottest wing. He had to step outside to get a breath of fresh air. When you order the 7 and eat it successfully your picture is put on a wall. This seems kind of fruitless though, since you will never look the same after that wing takes the rectum exit from the free way of your bowels. The only draw back that I saw with the wing dome is that they seem to be ill equipped for large parties. They have a "four checks per table" policy so if you have a large party you may not be able to get separate checks. I ordered 20 buffalo wings and I was brought and charged for 40 (which I didn't notice right away so I can't bitch too much) and when it did come time to split the checks up they were done incorrectly. Still I doubt this kind of trouble would have occurred had we ourselves been a little organized. If you’re looking for good wings and cold beer that can fit into a tight budget, I recommend spending an evening with a plate full of chicken wings at the wing dome- And this is your prefunk moment.
