New theories of intelligence have been introduced and are gradually replacing the traditional theory. Academic achievement is based on creativity, emotions, and interpersonal skills. Methods: The aim of this study was to see whether there is a relationship between emotional intelligence and academic success. Study was done on 1 st MBBS students of Govt. Medical College, Bhavnagar. The sample size was 75 students (boys and girls). The emotional intelligence questionnaire from Institute for Health and Human Potential was given to the students, Depending on the EQ score we divided the students in to five groups and compared with their academic performance. Results: Study showed inverse relationship between emotional intelligence and academic achievement. Conclusion: There is a negative relation among emotional intelligence and academic achievement of the participants.

By using the regression equation the necessity of the sophisticated gas analyzer is eliminated. The usability and applicability of such equations are questioned due to non-uniformity, standardization and other variables. Methods: 100 healthy young male subjects were recruited and each performed all the four selected treadmill protocol viz. Bruce, Modified Bruce, Ellestad and Balke. VO 2 MAX was calculated for each person for each protocol by using regression equation. Results: Mean and SD values of VO 2 MAX of each protocol were, Balke (41.94 ± 2.15), Bruce (64.55 ± 6.7), Ellestad (61.17 ± 7.5), Modified Bruce (64.36 ± 5.4). There was difference among different protocols (p<0.05), except between Bruce and Modified Bruce (p>0.05). These were compared with ACSM predicted equation based on age and height (51.5+7.4). Later Paired t-test was applied. There is no statistically significant difference between the Bruce and Modified Bruce protocols. Highest difference was observed between the Balke and Bruce protocol and between Balke and Modified Bruce, as was the difference between Balke and Ellestad protocol. Conclusion: For endurance testing Ellestad protocol can be a suitable option in resource crunch settings as the Balke protocol underestimates and Bruce overestimates the VO 2 MAX. Devising a ramp protocol for the population subset's need can be the best option. [Chavda V et al NJIRM 2013; 4(2) :

However, only few baseline studies have been conducted in India and none in Gujarat. Materials and Methods: Monocular pattern reversal VEP (PRVEP) was carried out using a standard protocol in medical students of same age group. Latencies of various waveforms were calculated and effects of gender, body mass index (BMI), and head size were studied. Results: Observations revealed normative VEP latencies in line with other studies. Difference observed for only N70 wave, head size were statistical significant and that for BMI, gender, and between eyes were not. Conclusion: Normative VEP data of age, BMI-matched healthy medical students showed no ethnic variation; disproved gender influence on VEP latencies and slight sex difference observed is due to head size.

Material and Methods: We investigated, progression of diabetic nephropathy by measuring arterial blood pressure , serum creatinine and glomerular filtration rate(GFR) level in 60 (35 men and 25 women) type 2 uncontrolled diabetes mellitus patients on antihypertensive treatment. Results: The survey was done for 6 months during which 30 (group 1) -uncontrolled diabetes mellitus patients with normal blood pressure were compared with 30 (group 2) -Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus patients with hypertension who had mean systolic blood pressure (SBP) was 148.86 ± 5.12 mmHg. In group 2 the mean level of serum creatinine (1.71 ± 0.46 mg/dl) was significantly higher and mean GFR (54.57 ± 35.26 ml/min) was significantly lower than group 1 (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Uncontrolled hypertension leads to progression of diabetic nephropathy with decline in GFR earlier than normotensive uncontrolled diabetic patients.

Reaction time is influenced by different factors. Effect of gender difference on visual reaction time has been observed in this study. Present study was carried out on 100 medical students of Bhavnagar medical college between the age of 17-20. Out of them 50 were boys and 50 were girls. Study was done under three module. In first module detail medical history of subject were taken, in second module visual reaction time of subjects was measured using reaction time instrument and in third module statical analysis was done by unpaired 't' test. From study it was concluded that reaction time is less in boys than girls.

Increasing age is associated with increasing disability and functional impairments and reduction or postponement of such a decline can increase longevity. PEFR which reflects respiratory muscle strength is a strong predictor of mortality in elderly. So we tried to study and compare the effects of short and long duration of swimming on PEFR with increase in age.

Reticulocytes are juvenile red cell. It is flat non-nucleated disc shaped, slightly larger than mature erythrocyte .The number of reticulocyte present in the peripheral blood is a fairly accurate reflection of erythropoitic activity of bonemarrow. Normal values in young adult-0.5 to 2.5% of total RBC count. The present study was conducted to find out changes in the reticulocyte count in the elderly subject. Aims: to uncover the effect of aging on reticulocyte count. Material and method: 90 subjects were divided into two groups, normal control group (n=30, mean age 35.83yrs) and elderly group (n=60, mean age62.55yrs). Reticulocyte counts were done by new Methylene Blue method. Result & Observations: significant decrease in reticulocyte count was observed in elderly group as compare to normal control group. Conclusion: our data suggests that aging may alter haematological parameters including reticulocyte count. [Jain P et al NJIRM 2013; 4(2) : 118-122]

Various factors affects individual's carrier selection. Among various factors socioeconomic status and parental educational background is most important, which affects student's carrier selection. More than student's interest in particular field for higher education he should be affordable for necessary money required as well he should have proper guidance and inspiration for higher education. Primary guidance of students starts at home so if parents are highly qualified in education, student can get good guidance and motivation at home. In present study we tried to evaluate Socio-economic and Parental educational background of Medical students. Study was conducted in first year medical students of Govt. Medical College, Bhavnagar. Students were given objective questionnaire regarding information like their native place whether in urban or rural area, income of their parents and educational level of their parents. Data was compiled and analyzed. It was observed that students from good socioeconomical and high parental educational background have good chances to get admission in good professional courses. Schools in rural area should be upgraded and this students should provide necessary help and guidance to meet their needs.
