Nigeria is one of the 26 countries within the extensive region of sub-Saharan Africa known as the "meningitis belt," where large epidemics occur. The outbreaks peak in the dry season in certain states is due to the low humidity and dusty conditions and usually end as the rainy season approaches, Meningitis is a tough disease and it is associated with overcrowding, which is why Nigeria records some of the highest incidences of the disease on the continent. Concerted efforts should centre on bringing the outbreak under control, as all stalk holders must work towards preventing outbreaks of this scale in the future. It is expected that States takes ownership of outbreak preparedness and ensure that all efforts put into preparedness translate to meaningful action for response. Hence local and international collaboratio...

The frequency of occurrence between male to female were 51.2% and 48.6% respectively while, that of staff to patients was 52.6% to 47.4%, hence relatively highly frequency of occurrence of MRSA with age amongst staffs and patients was noticed. The antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates were resistant to methicillin (91%), ampiclox (85%), amoxicillin (69%), gentamycin (60%) and pefloxacin (59%) and susceptibility to streptomycin (52%), erythromycin (42%), septrin(42%) and zimnacef (42%) which further established that S. aureus is a major causative agent for nosocomial infections, therefore it is recommended that proper infection control measure be put in place in our hospitals from primary to tertiary institutions especially in the instituti...

Place and Duration of Study: This study was carried out in the North Central zone of Nigeria and it included all the seven States across North Central Nigeria using two General Hospitals per state. The study included 371 positive sputum samples drawn from 2800 suspected pulmonary TB patients between 2017 and 2018. Original Research Article Chuku et al.; IJTDH, 39(2): 1-10, 2019; Article no.IJTDH.52717 2 Methodology: A total of 371 GeneXpert positive sputa for TB were decontaminated using N Acetyl Cysteine and Sodium Hydroxide under a level 3 Bio-safety cabinet and the resulting sediment was cultured on LowesteinJense...

The largest Ebola Virus Disease outbreak in history exploded across West Africa. The World Health... more The largest Ebola Virus Disease outbreak in history exploded across West Africa. The World Health Organization reported a total of 21,296 Ebola virus disease (EVD) cases, including 13,427 laboratory confirmed EVD cases reported from the three most affected countries Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone in 2014. Nigeria's first case of EVD was officially announced in July, 2014. In an effort to tackle the Ebola outbreak in Nigeria, the Federal Government, drawing on the experience of the Emergency Operation Centre's work with polio, declared Ebola a public health emergency and mobilized human, financial and material resources to contain the epidemic. Nigeria was officially declared Ebola free on 20 th October 2014. However, the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has spread internationally from the DRC into neighbouring Uganda and it ranks as the second deadliest outbreak in history. This ongoing epidemic hereby calls for intensified disease monitoring at the Nigerian border posts, health centers and communities, and a prompt review of preparedness activities in the country to prevent another outbreak.

Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of Candida species from cases of vulvovaginitis in women using contraceptives in four selected states of North Central Nigeria. Place and Duration of Study: The study was carried out in four selected states of North Central Nigeria and the Department of Microbiology, Federal University Lafia between the months of January to November 2018. Study Design: A cross-sectional study design was utilized. Material and Methods: One thousand six hundred samples of high vaginal swabs were collected in four States of North Central Nigeria. Four hundred samples were collected from women using contraceptive device in each state. Two high vaginal swabs were collected. Germ tube test, direct examination and l...

Place and Duration of Study: This study was carried out in two primary health care centres in Karu Nasarawa State between March-August, 2015. Methodology: A total of 150 pregnant women were enrolled for this study. Mid stream urine sample was collected from each pregnant woman, analysed and cultured on cystein lactose electrolyte deficient (CLED) medium. Results: The results revealed that the incidence of UTI in this study population was 62.67% and 94 bacterial isolates were identified based on colonial morphology, microscopic characteristics, and biochemical tests. The most predominant bacterium was Escherichia coli (22.97%). This was
