The Directorate, chiefly operating as a partisan bureaucratic-cum-political apparatus of the ruling political party in Turkey, the Justice and Development Party, produces videos to recast the history of Turkey in line with the ruling party's neo-Ottomanist, nationalist, militarist, and Islamist agenda. These three videos reviewed refer to the discursive building blocks of the AKP's so-called Islamic populist worldview in recent years: the glorious Ottoman past, accumulation and glorification of military power, and a holy cause. The historical repository used in the videos reasserts the loneliness of Turkey, the utmost belief in and dedication to the nation's leader, Turkey's emergence as a regional power, and the primacy of the nation's will. The article discusses the authoritarian and exclusionary implications of the misuse of history by official agencies.

Communication is among the most used and least theorized concepts across various disciplines, inc... more Communication is among the most used and least theorized concepts across various disciplines, including communication studies. There are many communication theories and models, most of which take communication for granted, only as a name and an unproblematic/self-evident concept. The concept's ambiguity relates to the definition of borders and the discipline's content. In 'Communication theory and the disciplines', Jefferson D. Pooley (2016a) presents an exhaustive list of disciplines that relate or are sensitive to communication theory, including sociology, psychology, political science, geography, economics, philosophy, history, literary studies, and cognate fields such as cultural studies, visual studies, game studies, popular music studies, gender studies, and LGBT studies. Located at the intersection of various disciplines, communication studies host a plethora of analytical frameworks, epistemological paradigms, and research interests. However, 'what it gained in intellectual richness. .. it lacked in disciplinary focus and shared identity' (Waisbord, 2019). Labeling communication studies as a post-discipline, Waisbord points to ontological plurality, theoretical heteroglossia, hyper-specialization of contemporary scholarship, and the overall decline of grand theories as the main reasons for the identity crisis. Communication is defined as connection, dialogue, expression, information, persuasion, and symbolic interaction (Waisbord, 2019). However, the ontological status of communication as such has not been adequately elaborated. What defines communication scholarship? What is the object and subject of communication? Most important of all, what is communication? These questions remain and seem to remain valid in the foreseeable future.

In the 1990s, Islamic channels were launched as a challenge to the so-called moral degeneracy of infotainment channels and claimed to represent an alternative form and content. However, far from presenting an alternative broadcasting style, Islamic channels rapidly succumbed to the logic of capital and the imperatives of commercial broadcasting. I argue that the transformation of Islamic broadcasting is related to the overall transformation of Islamism in Turkey.

This article explores the relationship between populism, media and popular culture in Turkey by f... more This article explores the relationship between populism, media and popular culture in Turkey by focusing on a phenomenal historical television series, Diriliş: Ertuğrul, and the discursive spaces opened by the show. The author relies on a symptomatic analysis of populism which conceptualizes the term as an anti-status quo discourse that simplifies the political space by symbolically dividing the society between 'the people' and its other, more specifically 'the elites'. Diriliş is promoted by the Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi) elite and pro-government media as 'the show of the people', and as a cultural artifact belonging to the people. The show has been embraced as an alternative to morally degenerate cultural products of alienated Westernist/Kemalist cultural elites. The Justice and Development Party elites used every opportunity to incorporate the series into its populist political program. The article focuses on a specific crisis moment, 'The Golden Butterfly Awards 2016', and the ensuing debates to show how media discourse can resonate with the populist political discourse of a political party.

Framing means selecting some aspects of a perceived reality and making them more salient in a communicating text. News frames give us definitions and identify those responsible for an event; make moral judgements; and propose solutions to problems. The analysis of
the news frames utilized by four newspapers underlines the fact that in a polarized media environment news frames are highly politicized and the distinction between news frames and official discourse is frequently blurred.

The authors suggest that as “unusual suspects” in social movements, Çarşı’s role in the Gezi Park protests can be understood with the conceptual toolbox provided by theories of contentious politics. Since action repertoires, or “known sequences for acting together,” are key to contentious politics and social movements, Çarşı’s organized and effective performance during the Gezi Park protests shows how previous encounters with the police can be decisive in terms of social upheavals. This study suggests that Çarşı members, who were already accustomed to making ethical judgments on a variety of issues both political and non-political, should be taken as a prominent example of how supporters on terraces and fan clubs facilitate the framing processes described by the social movement literature.

Citizens are exposed to discourses disseminated from innumerable sources, on living a healthier, happier life and attaining a more desirable body. The common point for these discourses is their role in medicalization and individualization of health, i.e. approaching natural cycles of life as diseases and ignoring the social determinants of health. Health professionals, or “health opinion leaders”, occupy a strategic and advantageous position in this process. Most recently, web 1.0 and web 2.0 environments, especially social media outlets come forward among these sources. Social media provides health opinion leaders with opportunities to continuous and easy opinion/idea dissemination, and to mutual interaction with followers. Definition and promotion of diseases and fear; lifestyles and habits; beauty; longevity; performance and personal development; and naturalness lie at the center of their discursive strategy. This article suggests that social media discourses of health professionals on health and body must be considered within the context of medicalization and commodification of health in contemporary societies, and within the context of neoliberal governmentality.

Problems such as debates over politicizing or depoliticizing character of new media; potentials of Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 tech nologies as public spaces; and the so-called emancipatory or delimiting qualities of the Internet became matters of theoretical and empirical inquiry. In other words, new media has become a popular issue in the field of po litical communication. Vast majority of the work done in the field pointed to the fact that over-generalizations or theoretical reasoning alone will not provide the researcher with adequate answers regarding the relationship between politics and the new media. Instead, handled within a sound theoretical and methodological frame work, and through empirical investigation, the instances and moments of the relationship between politics and the new media must be carefully analyzed. Departing from these insights, current work studies the relationship between the new media and politics through focusing on Twitter use of politicians in Turkey. More specifically the study investigated the content of professional politicians' twitter use. It asked whether politicians' Twitter use promote citizen participation into politics and dialogue with politicians, or basically utilized for self-pro motion and representation by politicians. The study analyzed one month (May 2013) Twitter performances of 20 politicians (5 from each party) from political parties which has parliamentary group in the assembly (the Justice and Development Party, the Republican People's Party, the Nationalist Action Party, and the Peace and Democracy Party) and who are most active Twitter users. The study finds out that interaction is a significant aspect of politicians' Twitter use in Turkey, but the quality of interaction is far from promoting a participatory political environment through use of digital technologies.

The event not only caused a serious rupture in Israeli-Turkish relations but also resulted in the rise of (already present) anti-Israeli sentiment in the conservative religious sectors of society. Conservative religious media, more specifically the Islamic newspapers, led the anti-Israeli campaign within this process. The authors emphasize that news does not simply represent reality, but, as an active process, works on it. The institutional dependence on regular and reliable institutional sources and the ideological character of language are two major dynamics of this process. The journalistic routine imposes the statements of the institutional sources, or the voice of the powerful, as the only reliable and viable definition of events. The language used in the news enhances this partiality through use of stereotypical, bitter and discriminatory expressions. This article discusses the way news texts influence reality by focusing on the primary and secondary definers in the news, newspapers' oscillation between humanitarian and Islamic concerns, and between anti-Zionist and anti-Semitic positions.

Kitab›n birinci bölümü olan "Girifl" k›sm›nda tez çal›flmas›n›n amac›n›n k›saca 'kanaatler sosyolojisi'nin yerine 'duygular sosyolojisi'nin geçirilmesinin olanaklar›n›n araflt›r›lmas› oldu¤u görülmektedir.

Özellikle Stuart Hall'un Marksist ideoloji ve kültür kuramına katkıları üzerinde yoğunlaşan makale Hall'un formülasyonlarının araştırmacılara 'toplumsal'ın karmaşıklığını kavramak açısından son derece değerli ipuçları sunduğunu vurgulamaktadır. Onun "nihai garantilerden yoksun Marksizm"i bize ideolojik düzeyin özgüllüğünü hatırlatmakta ve "açıklamaya çalıştığımız şeyin karmaşıklığı ile başa çıkabilecek" yeterlikte bir ideoloji kuramı geliştirmemiz gerektiğinin altını çizmektedir. Hall, iktidarın, kültürün merkezi bir öğesi olduğunu ve kültürün iktidar ilişkilerinin kuruluşunda hayati önemde rol oynadığını ısrarla vurgular. Onun kültüre dinamik yaklaşımı kültürel alan hakkında özcü genellemelerden kaçınmamıza yardımcı olur.

The authors suggest that as "unusual suspects" in social movements, Çarşı's role in the Gezi Park protests can be understood with the conceptual toolbox provided by theories of contentious politics. Since action repertoires, or "known sequences for acting together," are key to contentious politics and social movements, Çarşı's organized and effective performance during the Gezi Park protests shows how previous encounters with the police can be decisive in terms of social upheavals. This study suggests that Çarşı members, who were already accustomed to making ethical judgments on a variety of issues both political and non-political, should be taken as a prominent example of how supporters on terraces and fan clubs facilitate the framing processes described by the social movement literature.

This phrase refers to the test of learning-by-doing with which graduate students – and even more experienced researchers – are often confronted when carrying out fieldwork. The reason? Most graduate programmes in political science neglect to provide formal training in interview-based research. The starting point of this book is precisely the paradox that in spite of the fact that there is a long tradition in some subfields of political science of relying on field-intensive research, a considerable gap exists in the literature related to the use of interviews as a methodological tool. This book aims to fill this gap by addressing different elements of interview-based research. With that purpose in mind, this volume brings together 12 contributions from across different subfields of political science, but where they all share the goal of giving ‘advice, both practical and theoretical, about how to effectively use interviews as part of the research process’ (p. 26). The book is comprised of three main parts, preceded by an introduction in which the editor broadly outlines the main discussions associated with the use of interviews within political science. The first part touches upon general considerations such as aligning sampling strategies with analytical goals, the ethical treatment of human subjects, the power of the interviewer and the best ways to report interview data. These are valuable contributions for any researcher employing interviews as a methodological tool. The second part addresses the particular challenges of interview research like, for example, working with interpreters or facing the problem of extraterritorial legality. Readers might find particular aspects from here relevant for their own research, although other aspects might not be. The last part of the volume illustrates specific uses of interview data. Examples include, among others, elite interviewing in Washington and interviews to understand racial group identity and political behaviour. Apart from its value for filling a gap in the literature, this book has one additional merit: it reflects the epistemological diversity within the discipline, facilitating a dialogue between positivist and interpretivist scholars. Overall, the book is a valuable source for understanding the key challenges behind interview-based research – such as ethics, sampling, validity and reliability – and also contains practical advice for coping with interviews in the different stages of research. However, it should be clarified that, more than a handbook for interview-based research, it is a collection of texts interested in appraising interviews as a methodological tool.
