Lansing, Michigan – Pic of the Week | In Custodia Legis (original) (raw)

On a cold December day, my family and I took a detour on our Michigan trip to visit the state capitol, Lansing. It was a cloudy winter weekend, but the outside still showed a striking view of where state laws are made in the Michigan State Capitol building.

Michigan’s third capitol building (and second in Lansing) is located in Capitol Square. There are multiple monuments and even cannons to view on the grounds to the east. The capitol building is also a museum that holds various collections, including a collection of Michigan battle flags, mostly from the 1800s.

The Michigan Hall of Justice is the seat of the Michigan Supreme Court. It faces the state capitol but is an independent building, symbolic of its political status.

Finally, no visit is complete without finding the library! The Michigan Library and Historical Center are placed in the same building within two blocks of the capital. The Michigan Library began in 1828 when Michigan was still a territory and is now an agency within the Michigan Department of Education.
