After all, each of us is a member of many cultures, such as family cultures, ethnic cultures, religious cultures, national cultures, occupational cultures, organizational cultures, and others. Whenever people are together long enough to have shared experiences—successes and failures—they develop assumptions, values, and beliefs that influence their behavior and guide their future decisions. These are the basis for the cultures that surround us and provide a context for nearly all that we do. No wonder then, that those of us who are interested in improving human performance should be interested in culture, specifically that within an organization. This chapter examines what organizational culture is, how we can analyze it, and what its impact may be on human performance

As the distance between an organization's deciders and the organization's doers grows, control is more difficult to maintain. One way of maintaining a higher degree of control may be shifting from overt control over behaviors instead to the influencing of norms, values and beliefs.

Changes in the work environment are forcing instructional technologists to examine their priorities and to reexamine the primary skills they need to work in the field of performance technology. This interview study examines the collective advice, concerns, and recommendations of fifteen of ISPI's past presidents. They offer advice on essential skills, voice concerns about the general application of instructional technology, and comment on ISPI's role in the preparation of performance technologists in a world of fast-moving organizational problems, challenges, and opportunities.

Participants (N= 63) completed a computer-based lesson with or without learner-generated text topic headings. Posttests included a cued recall test of factual knowledge and a sorting task measure of structural knowledge. A significant disordinal interaction was observed with the no headings group performing better on the cued recall test and worse on the structural knowledge sorting task.

For some time, we have focused on financial value. However, we are beginning to be held accountable also for the impact of our interventions on society and the environment. The Six-P framework—proposed here––can help PI practitioners develop a broader view of organizational value and engage in planning and evaluation activities that will contribute to sustainability.
