Advocating Breastfeeding through respect for ourselves and other mothers.
I am so tired of the Boobie-bashing from both sides. I dreamed of having a forum where all breastfeeding attempts are lauded and encouraged, and advice is offered without condescending attitudes and disrespect, and after a suggestion from my husband, this community was born. There is a big difference between being honest and truthful and being tactless.
Rules:
- NO FLAMING, SNARKING, TROLLING.
- Be Respectful. Disrespectful comments will be deleted or threads frozen.
- Help your fellow mothers with a positive attitude, do not hinder them with negativity.
- No taking things out of the context of this community in order to snark them elsewhere. Have a little respect. The people who post things here are real people, and they have feelings.
- Think twice before posting. Evaluate the possible ways what you're saying could be interpreted. If there's a question about the possibility of it being taken the wrong way, wait a few hours and come back to it, and see if you feel any differently about what you want to post or comment.
We promote breastfeeding. We believe it is the best thing you can ever do for your baby, and even if you feel uncomfortable with a baby suckling at the breast, we can help you to find other ways to give your baby the benefits of breastmilk without nursing. We want to help, not judge, our fellow mothers, and try to help keep those babies at the breast as long as possible!
We all know that self-doubt is the biggest cause of problems when nursing, so please, ask for help before you give up! You can do it!
If you are looking for hard-line, hard-core breastfeeders, check out boob_nazis and their associated communities. Other breastfeeding or breastmilk support communites here on LJ include, but are not limited to: mommymilk, breastfeeding, lactivism, bf_evangelists, bfeedingsupport, breast_is_best, breastfeedinguk, enoughmilk, exclusivepump, pumpmoms, lactivistdads, militantboobers, mkbreastfeeding, not_weaning_yet, practicalbreast, relactating, single_nursing, and probably many more. Suggest one if I don't have it listed, and I'll happily add it.
You do not have permission to try to make any of the women in this community feel inadequate for making a mistake. Help them to move on.
I am currently looking for at least two other level-headed women to be co-moderators with me. If you're interested, please email tabbyfoo at livejournal.com.
Breastfeeding Recommendations:
The AAP's Recommendations on Breastfeeding and the use of Human Milk. This abstract references all kinds of helpful information about the benefits of breastfeeding - not only for the baby, but for the mother as well.
The World Health Organization's Recommendations on Infant Feeding. "Breastfeeding is an unequalled way of providing ideal food for the healthy growth and development of infants; it is also an integral part of the reproductive process with important implications for the health of mothers. As a global public health recommendation, infants should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life to achieve optimal growth, development and health. Thereafter, to meet their evolving nutritional requirements, infants should receive nutritionally adequate and safe complementary foods while breastfeeding continues for up to two years of age or beyond. Exclusive breastfeeding from birth is possible except for a few medical conditions, and unrestricted exclusive breastfeeding results in ample milk production."
P.S. This is not an anti-boob-nazi group... It's just a breastfeeding advocacy group. So as long as you're willing to be respectful, members of that community are welcome to join.
