The Turkish Online Journal of Distance Education, Mar 30, 2022

Specifically, it investigated three issues: (1) the levels of MORS use and ORC of the students majoring in languages, social sciences, and sciences, (2) the correlation between the MORS use and the ORC, and (3) whether the overall MORS use and category MORS use serve as predictors of the ORC. By using purposive sampling technique, 602 students were taken as the research sample. The Online Survey of Reading Strategies (OSORS) and an ORC test were used as the research instruments. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient (r), and simple and multiple linear regression. The results showed that the overall MORS, the problem-solving strategies, and the support strategies were used highly, while the global reading strategies were used moderately by students from the three majors. A significant correlation was only found between the overall MORS use and the ORC, and between the problem-solving strategy use and the ORC among the students from language major. The overall MORS use and the global reading strategy use predicted the ORC of the students majoring in languages. These results should be interpreted with caution since the strategy use was not assessed based on classroom observations but based on self-reports.

Many previous studies have examined metacognitive strategy use among ESL students in offline read... more Many previous studies have examined metacognitive strategy use among ESL students in offline reading settings, but very few have linked them to a gender context, especially among EFL students when reading online English texts. This research, therefore, explored gender differences in metacognitive strategy usage among Indonesian EFL students in relation to online reading abilities and English proficiency. It enlisted the participation of 426 female and 176 male students from the University of Borneo Tarakan. The data was collected using the OSORS (Online Survey of Reading Strategies), a self-rated online reading ability question, and an English proficiency test. An independent sample t-test, Pearson correlation, and simple and multiple linear regression were used to analyze the data. Significant gender differences were discovered in overall, problem-solving, and support strategy usage, despite the small effect size values, with the female students scoring better on average than the males. For self-assessed online reading ability and online English proficiency, no gender difference was identified. Among the less skilled readers, significant gender differences were identified in overall and support strategies, whereas among the skilled readers, no significant gender differences Agus Rianto ABOUT THE AUTHOR Agus Rianto is an Assistant Professor in the English Department and currently serves as Head of the Language Center at the University of Borneo Tarakan, Indonesia. The Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) Version 7.0 for ESL/EFL learners developed by Oxford was employed to measure the students’ EFL learning strategies based on gender, study program, and English proficiency differences. A descriptive analysis and an independent t-test were used to analyze the collected data. The findings showed that the female, the social science, and the higher English proficiency students used overall language learning strategies more frequently in their EFL learning. Metacognitive was the strategy category most used by the students and compensation was the least used one. The memory, cognitive, metacognitive, affective, and social strategy categories were used at a high level and the compensation strategy category, at a moderate level. Although there were significant differences in the use of ov...

A questionnaire consisting of 6 categories (benefits of online learning, benefits of face-to-face learning, learning assessment, problems in blended learning, suggestions for quality improvement of blended learning, and open-ended questions) was used as the research instrument. The collected data were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively. The results showed that most of the students perceived positively both the online and face-to-face modes used in their blended EFL courses, although they tended to have negative views on certain online technical aspects. Internet connectivity was the main problem and the solution of all technical problems was the main suggestion reported by the students. As this research was conducted only with students from one study program, the results should not be generalized and future researc...

Although the students differed significantly in using the overall and categorical strategies, they did not have differences in using some of the individual strategies. The students were moderate users of the strategies before the pa...
