Masterpiece. What a contrast to some of my favorite hyper violent samurai films. Such a quiet and peaceful film grounded in REAL. This is probably the most "human" samurai film I've ever seen. Hiroyuki Sanada is one of my all time favorites and this role is incredible. So often we see the character who wants to be the best, or reach legendary status. Rarely do we see the character who genuinely doesn't care in the wake of being weighed down by his personal life of raising daughters with a sick wife and aging mother at home.
Seibei was truly the most honorable character who had followed the flow of society as a new world was moving on from the way of the samurai. As skilled as he was, he should have been a legend and he should have been a higher class, but he wasn't and he didn't care. His life was hard but he was at peace with himself. His skills however, force him back to a life that he had long forgotten about.
The story of an impoverished father of 2 daughters; his love, his ill mother, his sword and not feeling good enough for the love of his life. A down to earth masterpiece that will break your heart. Not filled with action but beautifully paced in it's calm and quiet nature with a couple of TENSE action scenes. Love.
