The Bulinus and Biomphalaria snails serve as intermediate hosts for Schistosoma haematobium and Schistosoma mansoni, which are the causative agents of urinary and intestinal schistosomiasis in humans, respectively. This study aims to determine the distribution and abundance of these snail intermediate hosts along Kwanar Areh Dam, Rimi Local Government Area of Katsina State, Nigeria. Three different sites were selected at Kwanar Areh dam for snail sampling. Snails were collected on monthly basis, for nine consecutive months, using scoop net technique and modified manual hand picking, and were identified using their morphological characteristics. 808 snails were collected from the three sites; 259 (32.1%), 360 (44.6%) and 189 (23.4%) snails were collected from sites A, B and C, respectively. The snails were more abundant during early rainy season and site B significantly produced the overall highes...

The results showed that the ethanol extract of Waltheria indica dose and time dependently inhibited parasitaemia and extended the life span of the treated rats from 8.5 days of the infected untreated (control) rats to 30.3 days for the infected treated rats. The results also showed the plant extract to significantly improve the weight status of the treated animals beyond those of the untreated which continued to lose weight and died earlier. Treatment with the plant extract also significantly and dose dependently improved the hypoglycaemic state of the infected animals. It was concluded that plant was able to improve the hypoglycaemic state and weight status of the infected rats by controlling parasite proliferation, making it a possible agent for managing African sleeping sickness. Further studies will be carried out to determine saf...

Physicochemical properties and phytoplankton species and their distribution in Shagari Reservoir were evaluated. Standard methods of UNEP were used to determine monthly physicochemical flux properties, diversity and distribution of phytoplankton species were also determined. Phytoplankton classes identified included Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Cynophyceae and Dinophyceae. Class Chlorophyceae had the highest annual percentage distribution (37.55%) with four species identified. The least monthly percentage (7.64%) was recorded in November by Dinophyceae. Anabaena wisconsineae (Dinophyceae) had the highest frequency of occurence (96.6%). August, September and October were the most turbid months using Secchi disc measurement with 8.30, 9.0 and 9.8cm respectively. The monthly variation in the physicochemical parameters may be due to seasonal changes and human activities. The levels of nitrogen and phosphorus ranged from 0.30-7.30 Mg/l and 0.1-0.8Mg/l respectively. The reservoir has low species of phytoplankton, which may be due to low levels of nutrients and age of the reservoir.

Trypanosoma brucei brucei were cultured using 96 well micro titer plate and maintained at 37 0 C. About 20-25 parasites per microscope field were dosed with 1, 2 and 4mg/ml of aqueous extracts of the plants and a control group without extracts. After 5 minutes incubation in Eppendorf tubes maintained at 37 0 C, the parasites survived more than four (4) hours in the absence of extract/Berenil. At 4mg/ml of the extracts 0f Terminalia catappa, Waltheria indica, Cucurbita pepo, Entada abyssinica and Ximenia Americana, complete cessation of motility of T. brucei brucei within 60 minutes was observed. However, at 2mg/ml of Waltheria indica, trypanosome motility after 20 minutes was stopped but Terminalia catappa, and Ximenia americana were found to reduce trypanosome motility at 35 and 55 minutes respectively. Only Waltheria indica reduced trypanosome motility within 25 minutes at 1mg/ml concentration. Berenil, the standard drug, caused cessation of trypanosomal motility within 60 minutes even at 1mg/ml. From the results Waltheria indica was the most effective among the extracts when compared with Berenil, and may be a potential source of compounds with trypanocidal activity.

Plant leaf were collected and processed using cold maceration method. Phytochemical composition of the plant extract was determined. Rats were grouped into five groups of five rats each for the experiment. Albendazole was used for treatment at 7.5 mg/kg as positive control, while different concentrations of 75, 150, 300 and 0.0 mg/kg of the plant extracts were used for treatment of rats in the other groups. Daily worm-egg counts from all the rats for all the groups were recorded for up to 7 days post infection. Histopathology of tissues from representative rats from all groups was conducted to determine any visibl...
