This study focuses on social capital as an opportunity for community engagement in the management... more This study focuses on social capital as an opportunity for community engagement in the management of methane gas (biogas) as renewable energy, which the Self Help Group carries out on the final disposal site in Supit Urang. Methane gas generated from well-managed sites can provide positive advantages that can be used as an energy source (specially for cooking) for the local community as a replacement for LPG. Community participation in biogas management from methane gasses may improve public welfare, particularly in landfill capture and distribution. The Social Networks Analysis shall be used to determine the Rate of Participation (RoP), density and centrality of group involvement. The findings of the RoP study suggest that the concentration of participant affiliation to organizations influences the low level of participation. Density analysis reveals that when the respondent follows more than one organizations and entities, network density value is high, so the respondents can be more interlinked. Centrality analysis shows that measuring degree centrality by UCINET reveals that six respondents have the same high value and the same low central value. The median centrality is 0.58, reflecting the value of respondents and organizations.

The attachment of population to a place creates a special relationship with the surrounding environment. Place dependence is defined as a form of population attachment to a place in terms of functional dimensions, in such a way that it provides benefits for people to meet their needs. The existence of this attachment is expected to affect a person's decision regarding land conversion. This study aims to determine the relationship between population place dependence and land conversion (decision change or not). The data were empirically obtained from 500 households that owned land in the sub-district of Pandaan District, Pasuruan Regency, East Java, Indonesia, and analyzed using the structural equation model (SEM) partial least square analysis technique. The existence of this place dependence is expected to affect a person's land conversion decision.

The relationship between infrastructure development, economic growth, and income inequality has a... more The relationship between infrastructure development, economic growth, and income inequality has always been debated. Those debates raised the question of "is there a role for infrastructure development in economic growth which in turn encourages a decline in income inequality?". This study aims to analyze the direct effect of infrastructure development on economic growth and the indirect effect-on income inequality. The present study used the Gini Ratio, Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) data at constant market prices, investment, number of workforces, percentage of poor population, distribution of clean water, electricity distribution, and road length as of 2010-2016. The analytical methods applied here include descriptive method along with a twostep regression analysis method. The results reveal that infrastructure had a positive effect on economic growth, whereas direct economic growth harmed income inequality. These findings demonstrate that infrastructure indirectly reduces income inequality. Thus, infrastructure development, especially basic infrastructure and transportation, could reduce income inequality in Indonesia. Based on these findings, the government and related parties should encourage investment in basic infrastructure and transportation to improve economic performance sustainably.

There are three social capital variables used, including trust, social norms, and social networks. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), and a literature review were used in this study. The CFA results show that community social capital is formed from 9 factors, where the most influential variable is the trust variable with a value of 0.81 or 66.3%. The results of the SEM analysis show that the relationship of social capital is described through the trust variable, which directly influences social networks and social norms, which will then also affect social networks. Based on the community's social capital and its willingness to collaborate in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, we can conclude that the programs developed by the community and the government to combat the Covid-19 outbreak will go off without a hitch.

Research paper thumbnail of The role of infrastructure in economic growth and income inequality in Indonesia

Economics & Sociology, 2020
