Language is intrinsically interwoven with the culture that it sustains and the relationships contained within each community (Thomson 2007: 1). Its underlying function is to facilitate verbal and written communication. Thus it is sociocultural in nature but is also utilized at the individual level as a mediating tool for thinking and learning which aids in self-regulation and problem solving (Swain 2011: 37). Language also has a cognitive nature as it requires specific grammar, vocabulary and lexical structures. Yet, it is so much more than a formal, rule governed system (Huston 2006: 4). Language also has a spiritual nature as God uses it to uniquely contextualize Himself within various cultures (Campbell 2005: 1). God created languages so that His message of redemption through Christ could be understood and grasped. Language then is sociocultural, cognitive and redemptive in nature. Language is learned over a time period during which its threefold nature becomes understandable. Avery effective approach is the Growing Participators Approach (GPA) as it stresses the 'languacultural' aspect of language acquisition. 'Languacultural' refers to a blending of spoken discourse (language) and lived discourse (culture) to make a meaningful whole (Thomson Version 9:3). Within GPA the CUTER principles outline a helpful progression (Thomson 2006: 1). In our Portuguese language learning group we practiced the first principle of Communing on a small scale as we joined with Marcelo
