It has confined people to their homes, radically disturbed their taken-for-granted knowledge and beliefs, and forced them to alter behaviors once casually, even unthinkingly, employed in their everyday personal, working, and social lives. What has been learned? How might this experience stimulate a reimagining of the curriculum? More fundamentally, how might it lead to the development of a knowledgeable, intelligent, effective public, able to engage freely and equally in decision-making at all levels of social, cultural, political, and economic life, as a condition for personal freedom? This article explores the implications of "lockdown" or "confinement" to homes, which has suspended freedom of movement, limited the freedom to associate with others, and established rituals of hygiene regarding surfaces. These experiences of physical confinement and limitation of ordinary freedoms raise the central question of how to return to "normal" and, indeed, what will count as normal. In exploring the issues posed by these questions, this article offers an approach to pedagogical and curriculum practice that seeks to embed democratic practice at all levels of organization and interaction between individuals.

Two perspectives are taken, namely that of the Curriculum Models Project and that of an activity‐based network. In conclusion, the need to define processes of international research and development is discussed.

Research paper thumbnail of Exchanging Gifts: Collaboration and Location

Collaborative exchanges between teachers and educational researchers were studied through a proje... more Collaborative exchanges between teachers and educational researchers were studied through a project that focused on the induction of new community college teachers in Ontario (Canada). Each instructor was interviewed and much time was spent collaboratively developing full life history profiles. The focus of this exploration is on the on-site coordinator, who provided an initial teacher orientation week and workshop sessions every 2 weeks. Transcripts show that the teachers spent increasing amounts of time talking about micropolitical strategy and less time talking about classroom performance and the technical skills of teaching. Exploration of the developing views of the coordinator and his own thoughts on the micropolitics of the institution gives a view of the educator/researcher as he responds to the demands of the project. Developing collaboration and a sense of location, exchanging the gifts of information and practice, and sponsoring the "third voice" (a collusion between teller and listener) occupied the coordinator to an increasing degree as the project unfolded. Assuring that the teachers receive the gifts of research requires attention to communication at all times. (Contains 10 references.) (SLD)

The life history approach has an important role to play in illuminating human subjectivity. Collective memory method, which is innovative, used alongside the life history approach in the study, is employed to honor both subjectivity and inter-subjectivity in social inquiry. This paper also illustrates how the techniques of categorization, constant comparison and translation, as well as synthesis, were creatively used in the combined methods to acquire knowledge and understanding of the relationships between the persons and the systems both at an individual and a collective level. The epistemological and methodological potentials of the two methods are discussed.

International Journal of Qualitative Studies in …, 1995

This paper explores some forms of inquiry that are becoming influential within teacher education.... more This paper explores some forms of inquiry that are becoming influential within teacher education. In particular, the document focuses on forms of inquiry variously called "stories," "narratives," "personal knowledge," "practical knowledge," or in one particular genre "personal practical knowledge." Storying and narratology are genres which allow movement beyond (or to the side) of the main paradigms of educational inquiry-with their numbers, variables, psychometrics, psychologies, and decontextualized theories. Potentially then, the new genres offer the chance for a substantial step forward in the representation of lived experience in schooling. Because of this substantial potential, the new genres require very close scrutiny, for while they have some obvious strengths, there are some weaknesses which may prove incapacitating. This investigation seeks to locate the genres of narrative and storying within the emergent cultural patterns of contemporary societies and economies. The media context of personal knowledge is examined and a series of questions and issues are raised as a result. In the final section, some conclusions as to the role of personal knowledge in educational research are provided. (Contains 22 references.) (LL)

At each site, a set of empirical materials is examined relating to the subject of research. In this sense, curriculum documents, textbooks and high school teachers' narratives were analysed, observing the refractive processes gone through during the journey. The research encompasses the curriculum policies for the Brazilian high school in the last two decades. As a result, it highlights the unexpected ways of appropriation that emerge out of control along the way. Dealing with the reinterpretations of curriculum policies, it is necessary to consider the sensibilities and intentions involved in every state. It is possible to perceive, through a narrative capital, that public policies need to contemplate the life missions of the social actors involved in the education process.

By studying the different ranges of national responses and by understanding the differing contexts for educational change in historical periods, we can begin to think differently about educational restructuring. In this paper I report on some of the findings from a four‐year study of educational reforms in seven European countries undertaken for the European Commission. The countries covered are: England and Wales, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Finland, Sweden and Greece and the research was conducted from 2004 to 2008.

Adult learning matters. There is now widespread agreement that modern countries depend on the cre... more Adult learning matters. There is now widespread agreement that modern countries depend on the creativity, skills and knowledge of the entire population for their prosperity. Many people talk of our future well-being in terms of a ‘knowledge economy’ or a ‘learning society’ in which every person’s ability to develop new capabilities will provide them with resources that will help them and the wider community to adapt and thrive. While in theory this makes lifelong learning into an exciting prospect, in practice this broad agenda is often reduced to a narrowly economic conception.

This book reports on one of the largest research projects into lifelong learning conducted in recent years. Through over 500 in-depth interviews with a cohort of about 120 adults who were followed for three years, the Learning Lives project has built up a detailed understanding of what learning means and does in the lives of adults. The project has generated insights in how learning has changed over time and across generations, what the connections are with the changing world of work, what differences learning makes for life chances, how we can learn from life and for life, and how people’s prospects of learning can be improved. Combining life history and life-course research with analysis of longitudinal survey data, this book provides important insights into the learning biographies and trajectories of adults.

The book shows that learning means and does much more in people’s lives than is often acknowledged by current education policy and politics. In doing so, it is an invaluable resource for anyone with an interest in the role and potential of learning through the lifecourse.
