In January 2006 Hemant Mehta, once Jain now atheist, created an auction on eBay offering up his atheist mind&body to go to the worship service of whatever the winning bidder chose. Every 10wouldequalonehourinthatparticularplaceofworship.ThebiddingendedonFebruary3,2006withthefinalbidsittingat10 would equal one hour in that particular place of worship. The bidding ended on February 3, 2006 with the final bid sitting at 10wouldequalonehourinthatparticularplaceofworship.ThebiddingendedonFebruary3,2006withthefinalbidsittingat504 from Jim Henderson, a minister from Seattle, Washington. The money was later donated by Hemant to the Secular Student Alliance, a non-profit organization. The agreement was for Hemant to visit a variety of churches and to write about his experiences at them at the web-site off-the-map.org, and later developed into his book "I Sold My Soul On eBay". He continues to open up dialogue at his personal blog friendlyatheist.comSpread the word about this upcoming event. Free Evolution and Science dvds. Thanks to a multi-billion dollar medical institute! The Howard Hughes Medical Institute offers free dvds which contain lectures on various topics, from AIDS, to evolution. Here are some of them:Evolution: Fossils, Genes, and Mousetraps Evolution: Constant Change and Common ThreadsThe Science of FatThe Double Life of RNAAIDS: The Evolution of an EpidemicThe first is a lecture by Kenneth Miller, and it is a basic introduction to evolution lecture. He also criticizes Michael Behe's irreducibly complex arguments, and even shows a few clips from the Colbert Report. He also argues for the compatability of religion and science. The second evolution dvd has four lectures (each an hour long) going over the basics of evolution, and explaining the mechanisms of it. It also includes a 70 minute discussion on whether evolution and science is compatable with religion. I haven't viewed the other ones yet. The production quality is fantastic, and the sound and picture quality are perfect. And they're completely free (no shipping charge as well). I suggest ordering x3 of these so that you can hand some out to relatives, random people, etc. Here's the link to the HHMI site where you can order these.And help spread the link around! Hi. My name is Elizabeth and I recently joined The Brights here in Missouri. Just last semester, we were recognized as an official club at the University of Missouri and recieve school funding. We hope to have a conference in April and have invited Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, James Randy, Richard Carrier, and Steven Pinker. The full list of invitees can be seen at civilbrights.net. BrightsOnline.net Please have a look at BrightsOnline.net. The page is still in its infancy and needs us to grow!This community has already been added to Featured Sites. Anyone who's a Bright can add their personal page or LJ to the webring (the easiest way to do the latter is to add your profile page instead of the actual LJ link and include the webring banner in your profile - remember to remove all the extra linebreaks and tabs in the HTML (the Java doesn't work with LJ), as the profile editor is semi-WYSIWYG). You can also add your LJ to the Blog syndication by e-mailing contact@brightsonline.net. We've just given the place a bit of a facelift, hoping to make it easier to navigate as well as encourage a wider diversity of topics (for a while there no one ever talked about anything except science and philosophy and it got a little tedious in the long run ;) ). Faith schools, sect schools? The UK government is currently trying to put through a new Bill in Parliament which will allow state funded schools to be run by interested bodies such as religious groups and big business. While we've always had Church of England and Roman Catholic schools, we've never had the possibility that fundamentalist christian groups who advocate creationism and base their teaching on the Bible would be able to run schools in the state sector. It's crazy, and yet the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, is on record as saying that he believes that creationism should be taught in schools.If you think this is something that should be stopped, the Brights forum (of which I am a facilitator) have been working on a petition to send to Parliament and national newspapers objecting to this new Bill. Current polls by ICM show that about 64% of the British public feel the same. Ideogram or symbol? I brought up at a recent seattle brights meetup that I'd like us to have an ideogram- the kind of thing one might wear as jewelry (as Christians wear crosses and other groups have various symbols that make their way to lapel pins, tie tacks, etc).In a discussion on the cascadia BLC list (Cascadia Brights Local Constituency) I suggested a stylized hurricane lamp like **( these pictures showCollapse )**Reasons I think an ideogram is a good idea:1) helps to spread the meme2) helps us to identify each other3) provides good seed material for people to ask "what's that?"Criteria for a decent ideogram:1) easily drawn (crosses are just two lines, right?)2) easily distinguished (we don't want a symbol that looks too much like, say, the coffee pot for alcoholics anonymous)3) reflects the theme in some way. My suggestion is a tip o the hat to Carl Sagan's "Science as a Candle in the Dark" (subtitle to _The Demon-Haunted World_).If having an ideogram at all is a good idea, anyone have any thoughts about this suggestion? |

Attention South Florida Atheists, Agnostics, Freethinkers, and Humanists Our current members and I of the Broward Atheists Meetup (www.browardatheists.com and in www.meetup.com) welcome all interested in atheism, theism, freethought, agnosticism, humanism, transhumanism, state and church seperation (otherwise known as seperation of sturch), and related topics to our Tuesday meetings after 6:30pm. The www.browardatheists.com website has details on our venue, it is currently a pub, but will change when more members are acquired. We're already bulging at the seams with an average attendance of about twelve. No matter your age, beliefs, or preferences, we'd like to hear your opinion. Even the sternest Christians may come and present their thoughts, because if you really believe we're going to hell, we sure don't want to be wrong about the subject, haha, but most members are pretty confident about their atheism and agnosticism. I mention the invitation only to be open-minded. Anyways, we usually discuss religion, politics, philosophy, etc. but do not feel obligated to have to order anything despite it being a pub. There is no membership fee either, it is an informal event so far seeing how we have too few to be more organized, but we'd like to be! And we'd like to have enough people to start some activism and be as productive as possible.Aside from the weekly Tuesday meetings, there are fun events such as campfires and beach barbeques scheduled. We sure would like to cooperate with other groups and more members to voice the rights and freedoms we and others deserve regardless of our beliefs and with your ideas and help, this can be made possible. The current goal is to eliminate the negative stigma attached to our labels by altruism and stoicism such as scholarships and good deeds. E-mail me with any questions or better yet, any one else you can get in contact with from the website to get a clearer understanding of who and what we are. We turn no one down and encourage debate, skepticism, and reason. The meetings are definitely worthwhile and interesting or else I wouldn't waste the little free time I have as a college student to invite any one else to come join the experience. If you are in the area and find the time inconvenient with your busy schedule, no hard feelings will be had, but at least sign the guestbook so we can know you support us and wish you could come. :-)-Jason |
