Yet time is inscribed in all art works. Self-portraiture only presses the case for the temporality of art: it extracts a momentary view of the artist and their current environment; it looks simultaneously subjectively and objectively-or both inside oneself and at oneself from without. The more we examine the multiplicities of the genre, the more fragile any sense of something 'fixed' becomes. Far from being antithetical to the idea of musical duration, it is perhaps one of the best complements. The selfportrait is involved in a dialogical process, a conversation between the artist, their perceptions and the medium, and, of course, the viewer. It is also a conversation with history and tradition, consciously or not, and as such is yet again inherently temporal.

The title of this issue is taken from the collection of essays by Roland Barthes selected and translated by Stephen Heath, and first published as Image-Music-Text in 1977. One of the central conceptual strands of Heath's selection is the 'constant movement from work to text', when 'text' is taken to mean a methodological field and 'work' a 'fragment of substance', or perhaps an object. In the essay of this title ('From Work to Text,)2 Barthes begins by a discussion of the changing nature of the object of study:
