MICHIGAN — From breaking one glass ceiling to another, change takes collaboration: Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris joins Oprah Winfrey at Oprah’s Unite for America Live Streaming event Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024, in Farmington Hills, MI. The event was billed as “Unite for America.” Winfrey hosted the talk from suburban Michigan, one of this election’s key battlegrounds.
“We each have those moments in our lives when it’s time to step up,” Harris said, responding to Winfrey’s question about the overnight transformation from running mate to nominee in her own right after President Biden ended his re-election campaign.

Although Barcelona’s team began the season well, it lost Thursday 2-1 to Monaco, in part because one of its key players was given a red card (penalty) early in the game. This austere penalty ejects the offending player from the remainder of the match and prohibits the team from replacing him with another player.
This season also inaugurates the Champions League, which launched on Tuesday, Sept. 17. The Champions League increased the number of participating teams from 32 to 36 and increased the number of games played from six to eight, and against eight different opponents instead of three.

Trump’s talk with key Jewish donors seemed to be upstaged, however, by controversial remarks that one of his allies, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson of North Carolina, made. Trump seemed to be distancing himself from Robinson, the GOP gubernatorial candidate in North Carolina, who has made disparaging comments about his fellow Black people and about abortion. A CNN story referred to comments Robinson made about himself a decade ago, including his self-identification on a website as a “Black Nazi,” but he has since denied saying that.
Friday afternoon, Sept. 20, the Associated Press reported that, in the wake of the scathing CNN report, Robinson will not be speaking or appearing at Trump‘s rally on Saturday in eastern North Carolina.

NEW ZEALAND — Establishing new heights for women in service: New Zealand’s army chief, Major General Rose King, the first woman to head a military service in the country, is interviewed by The Associated Press at the defense headquarters in Wellington on Friday, Sept. 20, 2024. Maj. General King will have to rebuild New Zealand’s relatively small army, which has had to deal with rundown buildings, including those that were evacuated due to black mold. The South Pacific nation’s military budget is under 1% of its total GDP. One of the army’s strengths, however, is its ability to build strong forces with indigenous peoples in the Pacific-Oceania region.
During an interview with the AP, Maj. Gen. King said that not all of the larger nations that bid to offer support are supplying what tiny island nations find most helpful.

This year’s collection is named Ex Machina, after a theatrical device dating to ancient Greece, in which a dilemma is solved when a god or goddess appears on the scene. Modern circumstances refer to an unusual or unlikely development taking place in the plot.

CLEVELAND — ‘When a babe is born, when the game is won, we smoke for the joy of it all’: Cleveland Guardians’ Jhonkensy Noel celebrates in the clubhouse after they defeated the Minnesota Twins to clinch a baseball playoff berth, Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024, in Cleveland. Cleveland came from behind during the sixth inning to win 3-2 in extra innings. Tied at 2-2 at the start of the ninth inning, neither team scored, forcing a 10th inning. The Guardians scored again in the bottom of the 10th.
As of Thursday’s game, the Cleveland Guardians rank #1 in the American League Central, while the Minnesota Twins rank #4 in the same division.

The Guardians play a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals starting on Friday, Sept. 20.
