It shows some of the shifts that occurred in early 20th century internationalist discourse in relation to the legitimacy of colonialism. This case was the occasion of a complex debate between two rival conceptions of colonialism, both of which expressed aspects of the shifts taking place during this period. The chapter discusses three goals: to deepen understanding of the role of colonialism in international legal history, to deepen understanding of the nature and persistent influence of the shifts in international law that took place during the interwar period, and to give a historical perspective on post-Cold War debates about international interventions, such as that in Kosovo. Keywords:Cold War; Kosovo; Nationality Decrees

This essay proceeds from engagement with Linn Normand’s work on Israeli-Palestinian polemics to the broader ontological, epistemological, and political stakes in demonisation. It explores demonisation in thinkers like Frantz Fanon, Carl Schmitt, and Julia Kristeva. It relates this phenomenon to the problematisation of the religion/secularity divide by thinkers like Karl Marx and Talal Asad.

This article argues that understanding this relationship requires a close examination of the rhetorical techniques employed to portray it. The article is located in the spirit of the literary turn in Zohar scholarship, but marks a fresh departure in its methods of analysis and theoretical background. Its analysis demands a rethinking of the Zoharic conception of the formation of divine and demonic subjectivity. It borrows, for this purpose, from the work of Julia Kristeva, which is informed by both literature and psychoanalysis. The article thus contributes to Zohar and kabbalah studies generally, to discussions of interpretive methodologies drawn from the humanities in the study of religious texts, and to broader discussions of Otherness in a variety of fields in the humanities and social sciences.
