T... more Background Self-harm is a global public health concern, particularly among university students. This study explores the prevalence and correlates of self-harm among university students in Dhaka, Bangladesh, within the context of global, regional, and local trends. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 200 students from the University of Dhaka and the Bangladesh University of Business and Technology. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews, and analyses were performed using SPSS version 26. Results The study revealed a notable prevalence of self-harm at 17%, with a signi cant gender disparity-females reported a fourfold higher prevalence than males. Bivariate analyses showed no signi cant differences based on institutions, academic disciplines, habitat, or socioeconomic status. However, logistic regression identi ed signi cant associations; females had a higher likelihood of self-harm, and middle and high socioeconomic status were protective factors. Discussion Our ndings contribute to the global discourse on self-harm among university students, aligning with regional trends while providing locally speci c insights. The gender disparity emphasizes the need for gender-speci c interventions, and the protective effect of socioeconomic status highlights the importance of addressing economic disparities. Conclusion This study underscores the urgency of tailored mental health initiatives for university students in Dhaka. The observed prevalence and associated factors guide future research and inform evidence-based interventions to mitigate the prevalence of self-harm and enhance mental well-being on university campuses.

Until recently, no intervention had been found to produce meaningful improvement in these patients. We present here results of two studies one on SD the other on AS. Methods: Study 1 included 84 patients with SD seen in a mental health setting and Study 2, 172 patients with AS seen in primary care. In both studies, patients were randomly assigned to either a ''standard care'' or an ''experimental treatment'' consisting of a 10 session CBT designed for patients with unexplained symptoms. The Clinical Global Scale (CGI) for Somatic Symptoms was the key outcome measure. Results: In Study 1, CBT-treated SD patients were significantly more likely to be rated as ''much/very much improved'' than ''control'' patients (39.5% vs. 4.9%). CBT also led to a decrease in health care costs. In Study 2, CBT-treated AS patients were significantly more likely to be rated more ''much/very much improved'' in the CGI than those in the control group (60% vs. 25.8%). Depressive symptoms also improved more under CBT but the effect on physical symptoms was independent from that on depression. Conclusion: For patients diagnosed with SD and AS in primary and specialty care, CBT produced clinical benefits beyond those that result from current state of the art treatments. CBT may be the treatment of choice for most of these patients.

This study was designed to detect the presence of psychiatric disorders and associated abnormal psychosocial situations among children and adolescents with JIA and to evaluate their impact on and burden for their caregivers. Forty subjects with JIA suffering for at least one year were included in the study. Forty age- and sex-matched healthy subjects were included as controls. Clinical psychiatric assessment was carried out blindly, and psychiatric disorders and stressors on abnormal psychosocial situation were assigned on the basis of ICD-10 clinical diagnoses of multiaxial classification of child and adolescent psychiatric disorders. Chronicity, distress, social impairment, and burden for others were rated with the impact supplement of the strengths and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ). Of the 40 cases of JIA, 24 were boys and 16 were girls aged 10-18 years, with a mean age of 13.25 years. The frequency of psychiatric disorders was 35% in the JIA and 12.5% in the control group (p<0.001). The long duration of illness was associated with a higher proportion of cases with psychiatric disorders. In the JIA group, the diagnoses in decreasing order were depressive disorder (15%), somatoform disorder (12.5%), adjustment disorder (5%), and mixed anxiety and depressive disorder (2.5%). Significantly higher stressors, perceived difficulties, distress, social impairment, and burden for caregivers were reported in the JIA group with psychiatric morbidity. The presence of psychiatric disorders was associated with substantial impairment of learning, peer relationship, and leisure activities. Early psychiatric intervention might increase the likelihood of satisfactory outcome of treatment in JIA.
