In the process, India has become the fourth largest economy in the world. In the last two decades, a significant proportion of the population across the country has reaped the benefits of this economic growth. They have become the part of global economy and market, citizens with all the comforts and luxury in life. Apart from this mass poverty is one of the Major Critical Problems confronting planners in India poverty can be defined as a social fact in which section of the society is unable to fulfill even its basic necessities of life. The planning commission's new definition of poverty, based on the recommendations of the Suresh Tendulkar committee has now fixed a cut off of Rs.781 and Rs. 965 as the monthly per head expenditure in Rural and Urban areas respectively for a family to qualify as poor. But the World Bank has prescribed norms under which those living on less then $ 1.25 a day (Rs. 56 a day or Rs. 1680 a Month) should be considered poor, that means India fulfill only half of this norms. The traditional Method of defining poverty was based on haw many calories people consumed. Going by the new definition, the planning commission has estimated the planning commission has estimated that nearly 37% of the country's people-26 % of the urban population and 42% in the Rural areas-fall in to the Below poverty line (BPL) category. However, the intention of this paper is not to join the debate on the level of poverty reduction in the country but to recognize the reduction of poverty in the country during the post-economic reforms era and to under take a good Governance for poverty alleviation programmes in this era of fast economic growth. 2. Poverty Estimation System in India The data which released by planning commission in july 2013 is shows that the percentage of the population living below the poverty line in India decreased to 22% in 2011-12 from 37% in 2004-05. The achievements so far are innumerable, ranging from the right to vote and be voted for; increased access to education; more equitable pay with men; the right of women to make individual decisions; the right to own property, to mention but a few. Although there is a remarkable departure from the society's negative attitude and improper behaviour towards women, women are still far from achieving total freedom. This is largely so because most societies are patriarchal in nature and this makes it difficult for women to achieve total success in their agitation. Ikpanor (2016) also observes this; however, he thinks that women have achieved more success in advance countries, with an otherwise different story in patriarchal societies of Africa (p. 204). This does not suggest that women in advance countries have attained total freedom, as patriarchy is a global culture.

This paper examines polygyny in Razinat Talatu Mohammed’s The Travails of a First Wife. Using the realist literary theory, which aims at exploring and revealing the content of societal reality as reflected in works of literature, the study discovers that polygyny seems to favour men more than women; within the context of the novel, it is portrayed as an affront to women. It is the women who have to share one man. Hence, they are the ones who have to feel jealous, hate one another, battle for sex and suffer from the man’s uneven disposition of himself to them. Mohammed’s exposition of these seemingly human occurrences within polygyny presents the society with how some women feel and their experiences in polygyny and the possible causes of such experiences.

This article examines Anuli-Ausbeth Ajagu’s Maiden as a feminist text. The article focuses on the feminist theme of building and restoring the woman’s dignity and self-worth in a patriarchal society through a purposeful reconstruction and redefinition of the female image through feminist literature. This purposeful redefinition of the female image is seen as the responsibility of female writers whose duty is it to redirect the course of the woman through female characterisation, as against the stereotypical depiction of women as good time girls, sex objects, wives, and etcetera, by some male writers. Such a depiction of women is observed to contribute to society’s perception of and attitude towards women. Apart from the fact that women are stereotyped, the article discovers that women’s conduct contributes to the way men perceive and treat them. In a bid to conquer stereotypical assumptions about women, Ajagu’s portrayal, therefore, encourages women to conduct themselves in such a manner that would represent them in ways hitherto unknown to society. The article therefore concludes that writing against female stereotypes is not enough to change the status-quo, women must also see themselves beyond society’s stereotypical perception of them and act accordingly to disprove society’s lope sided view of women.
