The study investigates the effect of credit management practices on performance of microfinance b... more The study investigates the effect of credit management practices on performance of microfinance banks in Makurdi Metropolis, Benue State-Nigeria. The study specifically sought to find out how client appraisal, credit risk control and collection policy affect performance of microfinance banks in Makurdi Metropolis. The study formulated hypotheses in line with objectives of the study. A survey design was employed and primary data were collected through questionnaire administration. A pilot test was carried out to ensure that the instrument was valid and reliable. The study used 7 managers and 42 credit officers who constituted the population. A census sampling technique was employed for the study. The study used multiple regression analysis for data analysis and test of formulated hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Results of tested hypotheses indicated that client appraisal, credit risk control and collection policy have positive significant effect on the performance of microfinance banks in Makurdi metropolis. The study concludes that an effective credit management system is fundamental in ensuring the sustainability and survival of MFBs. The study recommended amongst others that management of the banks should enhance their client appraisal techniques to avoid having un-credit worthy clients leading to loan delinquency and MFBs should conduct proper check on clients' profile before giving loans to them to avoid issues associated with defaults.

This study explored the effect of entrepreneurial alertness on the performance of start-up firms in Nigerian publishing industry. The study measured the effects of three entrepreneurial alertness constructs; scanning and search, association and connection, evaluation and judgement on firm performance. A cross-sectional survey was adopted for the study and questionnaire was utilized for the collection of data from 125 employees of four start-ups publishing firms in Nigeria; Kachifo Limited, Cassava Republic Press, Masobe Books and Narrative Landscape Press that constituted the study population. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics (means and standard deviations) and inferential statistics (correlation and multiple regression) with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 23 version) software. The study established a positive correlation between entrepreneurial alertness dimensions and firm performance. Results of tested hypotheses indicated that alertness scanning and search and alertness evaluation and judgement both have positive and significant effect on firm performance. The study however found that there is no significant effect of association and connection on firm performance. The study suggested that start-up firms should be able to discover feasible opportunities by improving their scanning behaviour and the capability to constantly appraise the environment to adequately utilize available information.

Stiff competition requires SMEs to adopt different strategies to improve performance. This study examines the effect of market growth strategies on the performance of small and medium scale enterprises in Benue State, Nigeria. The study specifically examined the effect of product development strategy, market penetration strategy and quality customer service strategy on the performance of small and medium scale enterprises in Benue State, Nigeria. The study adopted a survey research design and questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. The population of the study includes 281 SMEs in Makurdi metropolis selected across different sectors including Retail/Wholesale, Services, Agribusiness and Manufacturing. Mean and standard deviation were used for data presentation and analysis while regression analysis was used for test of hypotheses. Findings of the study indicated that product development strategy and market penetration strategy have significant effect on the performance of small and medium scale enterprises in Benue State, Nigeria. The study also revealed that quality customer service strategy has significant effect on the performance of small and medium scale enterprises in Benue State, Nigeria. The study recommended amongst others that owners of SMEs in Benue State should always use strategies that will align market needs to be able to attract more customers and face competitors in the market.

The study specifically examines the effect of three outsourcing strategies (contracting, comprehensive and selective strategy) on profitability and operational efficiency of deposit money banks in Nigeria. Structured questionnaire was used as the instrument for collection of primary data. A sample size of 261 was determined from a population of 752 employees of four deposit money banks in Nigeria (First Bank of Nigeria Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc, Guaranty Trust Bank Plc and Zenith Bank Plc) Validity and reliability of instrument were determined using Cronbach Alpha and Factor Analysis respectively. Descriptive statistical tools such as table and simple percentages were used for data presentation while multiple regression analysis was used to determine the effect of the independent variables on the dependent variables. Results of tested hypotheses revealed that all the dimensions of outsourcing strategies (contracting, comprehensive and selective strategy) have positive significant effect on performance on deposit money banks in Nigeria. The study concluded that outsourcing as a strategy has become a useful weapon for corporate organizations most especially the banking industry where there is stiff competition. The study recommends among others that managers of deposit money banks in Nigeria should ensure that banks continue to benefit from the positive significant effect through selective outsourcing of functions as it contribute more to the profitability level and operational efficiency in the banking industry.

Majority of businesses operating in the localities of Benue state in Nigeria including Makurdi, the state capital are on small and medium scale. For decades now, SME's are considered as an importantaspect of Nigeria's economy and this makes it quite necessary to investigate the extent to which entrepreneurial leadership may boost performance of SMEs in Benue state. Considering this fact, this study seeks to examine the effect of entrepreneurial leadership on performance of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises in Benue state, Nigeria. The study employed a quantitative survey research design. To ascertain the relationship between the variables, this study targeted a population of 708 owners/ managers who assume leadership positions in SMEs across Benue state. This number cuts across sectors like food processing, livestock rearing, trading, art/craft, bakery, table water, fashion and designing/hair dressing and ICT. Out of this figure 400 managers/leaders were selected to represent the sample through purposive sampling technique. The data collection instrument for the study was a self-administered questionnaire A validity and reliability test was carried out on 30 employees from other organizations who were not part of the sample and through Cronbach's alpha the overall reliability coefficient of 0.896 was obtained. The instrument was therefore considered consistent to be used in this study.The cleansed data was further quantitatively analyzed by product moment correlation and multiple regression. Correlation was used to determine the magnitude of the relationship between entrepreneurial leadership and performance of SMEs while multiple regression was used to test how leadership style explains changes in business performance of SMEs. Hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Analysis was done with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 21). Results of correlation analysis reveal that there is significant relationship between all the constructs of Entrepreneurial leadership (miner behavior,explorer behavior,accelerator behavior and integrator behavior) and performance of SMEs. The result of regression analysis showed that miner behavior,explorer behavior,accelerator behavior and integrator behavior jointly contribute to the observed change in SMEs performance. This study concludes that entrepreneurial leadership behaviors of managers/owners of SMEs significantly affect performance of such SMEs. Arising from the findings and conclusion, it is recommended that mangers/owners of SMEs avail themselves to available training options on how to effectively create and communicate vision as this is found to be a leadership behavior that positively correlates performance of SMEs. This study also recommends that entrepreneurs to develop their ability to inspire followers and act as role models for followers, as well as refine their opportunity recognition, innovation, and creativity skills since this too significantly affects firm performance. Finally, it is recommended that entrepreneurs should seek out development opportunities to enhance their entrepreneurial leadership skills before and during a business venture.

This study examined the effect of fringe benefits on employee productivity in Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS). The specific objectives of the study include to; determine the effect of security benefits on employee productivity in Benue State Internal Revenue Service; examine the effect of health protection benefits on employee productivity in Benue State Internal Revenue Service and ascertain the effect of retirement benefits on employee productivity in Benue State Internal Revenue Service. Three hypotheses were formulated in line with the objectives. The study used a population of 617 staff of Benue Internal Revenue Service and a sample of 243 was determined using Taro Yamane's formula. The study adopted a survey research design and questionnaire was used as the instrument of data collection. Mean and standard deviation were used for data presentation and analysis and regression analysis was used for test of formulated hypotheses with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS Version 21). Findings of the study indicated that security benefits, health protection benefits and retirement benefits have significant effect on employee productivity in Benue State Internal Revenue Service. The study concluded that fringe benefits provided by Benue Internal Revenue Service are very important in improving the productivity and commitment of employees. It recommended amongst others that management of Benue State Internal Revenue Service should continuously provide all fringe benefits and good working condition to every employee in the organisation to help increase their productivity.

The study focused on women entrepreneurs who are clients of selected Microfinance Banks in Makurdi Metropolis, Benue State. The study specifically examined the effect of microfinance loan services, microfinance saving services and microfinance training services on the performance of women-owned enterprises in Benue State. A survey design was adopted for the study and questionnaire was used for data collection. The population consists of 68 owners of women-owned enterprises in Makurdi metropolis, Benue State. A census sampling method was adopted and the entire population was used for this study. Simple percentages, mean and standard deviation were used for data presentation and analysis while regression analysis was used for test of hypotheses. Findings of the study revealed that microfinance loan services, microfinance saving services and microfinance training services have significant effect on the performance of women-owned enterprises in Benue State. The study concludes that microfinance banks services significantly affect the performance of women-owned enterprises in Benue State. The study recommended amongst others that microfinance banks should always give loans to female entrepreneurs in Benue State with low interest rates in order to encourage them to expand their businesses and improve their standard of living.

The pace at which this can be realized is hinged essentially on the ability of business owners and managers to formulate appropriate policies and how to effectively implement the formulated policies since every business organization operates according to laid down principles and strategies. However, most business organizations have failed to formulate polices key areas of business policy which significantly affects their performance. This study seeks to investigate business organizations how business policy affects the performance of Nigerian banking industry with focus on First Bank of Nigeria Plc, Lafia. The study specifically examined the effect of personnel policy, finance policy and marketing policy on organizational performance in Nigeria. The study used questionnaire as the instrument for data collection. The instrument was distributed to 87 senior and management staff of the organization. Regression analysis was used for data presentation and analysis. Findings of the study revealed that there is a significant positive effect of personnel policy on organizational performance in Nigeria. The study also found a significant effect of finance policy on organizational performance in Nigeria. Finally, the study revealed that marketing policy has significant effect on organizational performance in Nigeria. The study concludes that business policy significantly affect the performance of organizations in Nigeria regarding quality of service delivery and operational efficiency. The study recommends amongst others that management of organizations should always develop good strategies in rewarding their workers to bring out the best in them and they should constantly train employees to enable them acquire better skills that will help to improve organizational performance.

The study specifically examines the effect of human resource capabilities, technological capabilities and marketing capabilities on the performance of small and medium scale enterprises in Benue State, Nigeria. The study adopts a survey design and questionnaire was used for data collection. A sample of three hundred (300) was derived from a population 1,250 SMEs in Benue State using Taro Yamane formula. The primary data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics (frequency counts, mean scores and percentages) while regression analysis was used for test of hypotheses at 5% level of significance with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 21). Findings of the study revealed that human resource capabilities, technological capabilities and marketing capabilities significantly affect the performance of small and medium scale enterprises in Benue State. The study concludes that internal environmental factors are important to the growth and survival of SMEs. The study recommends amongst others that managers and owners of SMEs in Benue State should continually upgrade their local technologies so as to gain competitive advantage.

This study investigated the effect of mentoring on the growth of selected small scale businesses in Makurdi Metropolis, Benue State. The study specifically examined the effect of career support, psychological support and knowledge transfer on the growth of selected small scale businesses in Makurdi Metropolis. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey design and the population of the study was 152 (owners and employees) of small scale businesses within Makurdi Metropolis. A pilot study was carried out to measure validity and reliability of items on the questionnaire. Data collected from respondents through self-administered questionnaire were analysed using Mean, Standard Deviation and Regression Analysis. Formulated hypotheses were tested with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 23) software. The study found that career support has significant effect on the growth of small scale businesses (P.019; β=.349); psychological support has significant effect on the growth of small scale businesses (P.000; β=.734) and knowledge transfer has significant effect on the growth of small scale businesses (P.000; β=.516). It recommended amongst others that government should organize mentorship programmes for entrepreneurs and business men to enable them have knowledge about business mentoring and the importance of transferring knowledge to enhance viability and growth of their businesses.

The study was anchored on theDual –Process Theory.The researcher used both primary and secondary sources from a sample of 154 respondents obtained by the use of a well structured questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, simple percentage and the relationship between the variables of the model was tested using multiple linear regression analysis. The result of the regression analysis indicates that the probability value of the regression analysis was used to test the first hypothesis at 5 % level of significance and the p-value (0.002) was lower than the significance level this means that the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative accepted. The focus of this paper is on analysis of socio-cultural factors on entrepreneurship development among the Tiv people of Benue State, Nigeria. The researcher also examined the effect of family system, cultural values and festivities in affecting the development of entrepreneurship and emergence of entrepreneurs in Tiv land. In pursuit of the focus of this paper, it treats the concept of socio-cultural factors and entrepreneurship development. It also x-rays in detail the effect of extended family system, cultural values and festivities on entrepreneurship development. The study is based on review of previous empirical studies on the relationship between socio-cultural factors and entrepreneurship. The findings of this study indicated that the family system, cultural values and festivities have significant effect on the development of entrepreneurship in Tiv land, Benue State. The study concludes that socio-cultural factors affect entrepreneurship development in Benue State. The study recommends that government should put in place an education policy that educate the citizenry on the cultural factors that are found to be anti-entrepreneurial, parents and children in Tiv land should develop a new set of positive values that attract and facilitate entrepreneurship development in the state, and entrepreneurs in Tiv land should be aware of the multiple influencing factors in the State and develop the ability to correctly gauge opportunities.

Correlation was used to determine the magnitude of the relationship between entrepreneurial leadership and performance of SMEs while multiple regression was used to test how leadership style explains changes in business performance of SMEs. Hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Analysis was done with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 21). Results of correlation analysis reveal that there is significant relationship between all the constructs of Entrepreneurial leadership (miner behavior,explorer behavior,accelerator behavior and integrator behavior) and performance of SMEs. The result of regression analysis showed that miner behavior,explorer behavior,accelerator behavior and integrator behavior jointly contribute to the observed change in SMEs performance. This study concludes that entrepreneurial leadership behaviors of managers/owners of SMEs significantly affect performance of such SMEs. Arising from the findings and conclusion, it is recommended that mangers/owners of SMEs avail themselves to available training options on how to effectively create and communicate vision as this is found to be a leadership behavior that positively correlates performance of SMEs. This study also recommends that entrepreneurs to develop their ability to inspire followers and act as role models for followers, as well as refine their opportunity recognition, innovation, and creativity skills since this too significantly affects firm performance. Finally, it is recommended that entrepreneurs should seek out development opportunities to enhance their entrepreneurial leadership skills before and during a business venture.

This study examined the effect of fringe benefits on employee productivity in Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS). The specific objectives of the study include to; determine the effect of security benefits on employee productivity in Benue State Internal Revenue Service; examine the effect of health protection benefits on employee productivity in Benue State Internal Revenue Service and ascertain the effect of retirement benefits on employee productivity in Benue State Internal Revenue Service. Three hypotheses were formulated in line with the objectives. The study used a population of 617 staff of Benue Internal Revenue Service and a sample of 243 was determined using Taro Yamane's formula. The study adopted a survey research design and questionnaire was used as the instrument of data collection. Mean and standard deviation were used for data presentation and analysis and regression analysis was used for test of formulated hypotheses with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS Version 21). Findings of the study indicated that security benefits, health protection benefits and retirement benefits have significant effect on employee productivity in Benue State Internal Revenue Service. The study concluded that fringe benefits provided by Benue Internal Revenue Service are very important in improving the productivity and commitment of employees. It recommended amongst others that management of Benue State Internal Revenue Service should continuously provide all fringe benefits and good working condition to every employee in the organisation to help increase their productivity.

The study focused on women entrepreneurs who are clients of selected Microfinance Banks in Makurdi Metropolis, Benue State. The study specifically examined the effect of microfinance loan services, microfinance saving services and microfinance training services on the performance of women-owned enterprises in Benue State. A survey design was adopted for the study and questionnaire was used for data collection. The population consists of 68 owners of women-owned enterprises in Makurdi metropolis, Benue State. A census sampling method was adopted and the entire population was used for this study. Simple percentages, mean and standard deviation were used for data presentation and analysis while regression analysis was used for test of hypotheses. Findings of the study revealed that microfinance loan services, microfinance saving services and microfinance training services have significant effect on the performance of women-owned enterprises in Benue State. The study concludes that microfinance banks services significantly affect the performance of women-owned enterprises in Benue State. The study recommended amongst others that microfinance banks should always give loans to female entrepreneurs in Benue State with low interest rates in order to encourage them to expand their businesses and improve their standard of living.

The pace at which this can be realized is hinged essentially on the ability of business owners and managers to formulate appropriate policies and how to effectively implement the formulated policies since every business organization operates according to laid down principles and strategies. However, most business organizations have failed to formulate polices key areas of business policy which significantly affects their performance. This study seeks to investigate business organizations how business policy affects the performance of Nigerian banking industry with focus on First Bank of Nigeria Plc, Lafia. The study specifically examined the effect of personnel policy, finance policy and marketing policy on organizational performance in Nigeria. The study used questionnaire as the instrument for data collection. The instrument was distributed to 87 senior and management staff of the organization. Regression analysis was used for data presentation and analysis. Findings of the study revealed that there is a significant positive effect of personnel policy on organizational performance in Nigeria. The study also found a significant effect of finance policy on organizational performance in Nigeria. Finally, the study revealed that marketing policy has significant effect on organizational performance in Nigeria. The study concludes that business policy significantly affect the performance of organizations in Nigeria regarding quality of service delivery and operational efficiency. The study recommends amongst others that management of organizations should always develop good strategies in rewarding their workers to bring out the best in them and they should constantly train employees to enable them acquire better skills that will help to improve organizational performance.

The study specifically examines the effect of human resource capabilities, technological capabilities and marketing capabilities on the performance of small and medium scale enterprises in Benue State, Nigeria. The study adopts a survey design and questionnaire was used for data collection. A sample of three hundred (300) was derived from a population 1,250 SMEs in Benue State using Taro Yamane formula. The primary data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics (frequency counts, mean scores and percentages) while regression analysis was used for test of hypotheses at 5% level of significance with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 21). Findings of the study revealed that human resource capabilities, technological capabilities and marketing capabilities significantly affect the performance of small and medium scale enterprises in Benue State. The study concludes that internal environmental factors are important to the growth and survival of SMEs. The study recommends amongst others that managers and owners of SMEs in Benue State should continually upgrade their local technologies so as to gain competitive advantage.

This study investigated the effect of mentoring on the growth of selected small scale businesses in Makurdi Metropolis, Benue State. The study specifically examined the effect of career support, psychological support and knowledge transfer on the growth of selected small scale businesses in Makurdi Metropolis. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey design and the population of the study was 152 (owners and employees) of small scale businesses within Makurdi Metropolis. A pilot study was carried out to measure validity and reliability of items on the questionnaire. Data collected from respondents through self-administered questionnaire were analysed using Mean, Standard Deviation and Regression Analysis. Formulated hypotheses were tested with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 23) software. The study found that career support has significant effect on the growth of small scale businesses (P.019; β=.349); psychological support has significant effect on the growth of small scale businesses (P.000; β=.734) and knowledge transfer has significant effect on the growth of small scale businesses (P.000; β=.516). It recommended amongst others that government should organize mentorship programmes for entrepreneurs and business men to enable them have knowledge about business mentoring and the importance of transferring knowledge to enhance viability and growth of their businesses.

The researcher also examined the effect of family system, cultural values and festivities in affecting the development of entrepreneurship and emergence of entrepreneurs in Tiv land. In pursuit of the focus of this paper, it treats the concept of socio-cultural factors and entrepreneurship development. It also x-rays in detail the effect of extended family system, cultural values and festivities on entrepreneurship development. The study is based on review of previous empirical studies on the relationship between socio-cultural factors and entrepreneurship. The findings of this study indicated that the family system, cultural values and festivities have significant effect on the development of entrepreneurship in Tiv land, Benue State. The study concludes that socio-cultural factors affect entrepreneurship development in Benue State.
