Using data from interviews, email communications and the code itself we describe how the orderliness of such projects is achieved in contrast, perhaps, to stereotypical views of 'hacker' projects. We use this data to explicate the ways in which OSS projects are accomplished and the ways in which the various participants observably, reportably, accountably orient their actions, their contributions to the project as a whole. The contrast we draw is not with idealised views on software projects but with ethnographic and ethnomethodological studies of software production that emphasise the project as a practical, ongoing achievement. The paper moves beyond idealised versions of the open source project towards understanding OSS as a practical sociological phenomenon.

The operators receive emergency calls and are responsible for the coordination and dispatch of ambulances and rescue services. Emergency literature has treated its materials in the mode of catastrophe. Operators' mundane work and technological environment for handling the unexpected changes have been often addressed in terms of error, mistakes, mishandling and other misunderstandings. Our paper wants to show that operator's work practice sustained a comprehensive approach of technology use such as to keep full ability to handle unexpected change. This point is crucial to understand technology in action. It is precisely the good handling of technology that allows taking into account the most unexpected change with great success. Our paper shows how story eliciting is bounded to technological possibilities and as such is part of everyday professional conduct of call taker and dispatchers. The challenge of this paper is to show that technology is a crucial part of their mode of action. As such, it cannot be separated from the on-going course of case handling. Our particular case is a story where a caller requests an ambulance on behalf of an unconscious friend. The operator decides to proceed to the dispatch of an ambulance. In the sustained conversation with the caller, it turns out that the friend in question recovered her consciousness. We show in this paper that the story elicitation, remote conversation and scenic background information, are working tools that keep access with the reality of the caller. The main point is that emergency can turn out to be health care advice without any major problems. We will show that all key access to the scenic feature of the caller are monitored through and through by technological artefacts that will be examined.

They emphasise the salient role of networks, and argue that networks are more important than regional proximity. The work by Etxebarria and Uranga aims at showing the importance of culture and social values in strengthening learning and knowledge networks between firms and cooperative organisations. They find that inter-agent collaboration contributed most intensively to the creation and diffusion of knowledge. The collection of chapters ends with Sokol's critical piece. He argues that the knowledge economy should be conceptualized as an "institutionalized social process" shaped by labour, the state and capital. There are some issues that could have been improved. First, it seems that the two editors composed the introduction and concluding chapter without consulting each other very much. Several repetitions can be noticed in these two parts. Second, the book remains an assortment of individual papers, with insufficient attention to coherence of content and organisation. Third, and somewhat annoying, is the omission of quantitative analysis and theoretical models. Most of the studies merely use simple descriptive statistics. Overall, the book covers a large variety of topics related to regional economies and knowledge economies. An important merit of this book is the use of case studies of regions and firms to illustrate arguments. However, the reader should be cautioned because generalisation to other regions and firms is not always possible. The book will be very instructive for students as well as researchers interested in regional economics, policy makers and regional planners.

Working IT Out in Medical Practice: IT Systems Design and Development as Co-Realisation

The aim is to build a new understanding between IT professionals and users which is grounded upon what happens as the latter grapple with the problems of applying IT, appropriating its functionalities and affordances into their work practices and relations. Methods: Following a discussion of participatory design and ethnomethodology, a novel method called co-realisation, which aims to provide a synthesis of the preceding methods, is suggested as an alternative. Through a discussion of findings from a case study of IT systems design and development in healthcare we show how the co-realisation approach might provide work-affording systems and how user-designer relations might be reformulated. We suggest that work-affording systems can be developed through the deployment of an engaged facilitat...

Co-realisation is an orientation to technology production that develops out of a principled synthesis of ethnomethodology and participatory design. It moves the locus of design and development activities into workplace settings where technologies will be used. Through examples drawn from case studies of IT projects, we show how co-realisation, with its stress on design-in-use and the longitudinal involvement by IT professionals in the 'lived work' of users, helps to create uniquely adequate, accountable solutions to the problems of IT-organisational integration.

To do this, we proceed to indicate that our problem is not with engineering procedures but with the portrayal of human action and especially human interaction in the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). We deconstruct the use of cognitive, information processing models of HCI and indicate how such conceptualisations are problematic and lead to a simplification of human action. As a result, we indicate that tools of ethnomethodological sensitivity provide more detailed and accurate analyses of work practices and technology. We consider the impact of replacing the cognitive HCI model with descriptions of work, action and interaction provided by ethnomethodological studies. We continue to provide some remarks on the ways in which such descriptions may form a useful resource for systems designers, by providing a better description of current socio-technical...

The main issue dealt with epistemological issues in the context of the contemporary communication age. It consists to clarify the relation between economic ideas and their relation to reality. To proceed accordingly, I implement a hermeneutic method applied to Rifkin’s discourse. That method is grounded in the scholarly tradition of “the ordinary language philosophy”. Its results proceed to show 2 distinct language games at work: 1- the neoclassical definition of marginal cost and its own logic is distinct from Rifkin’s use of it. 2- Rifkin uses the expression “marginal cost” under the auspices of an ideological discourse on the demise of capitalism. 3- The confusion is based on a systematically deceptive use of scholarly referencing. I conclude by drawing some le...

Notably, I present the development of logical and parallel architecture (Kowalski, Clark and Gregory, 1982), hybrid systems such as POPLOG using elements of PROLOG with LISP and the use of other languages and non-logical augmentation (Mellish and Hardy, 1982) and some reflection on computer and education dealing with the definition of the user in relation to the development of micro-PROLOG (Ennals, 1982, 1984) and (3) a reflection on the transformation of the computing field and its implication for epistemic practices and professional dynamics.
