Bloomington Residents' Journal (original) (raw)

Monday & Tuesday
3 to 7pm

Video Production - will facilitate youth in production of their own monthly television show that would mirror the goals of the Youth Radio Program and be broadcast on Community Access Television (CATS). The show (tentatively entitled RHINOVISION) will be student produced and planned. It is hoped that the program would focus on student achievements and explore issues that effect teens in Monroe County. It will also feature creative anti tobacco messages. Training will include production, writing, editing, and design. The studio is fully equipped and the program should begin sometime in early September of 2001.

Wednesdays
3 to 6pm

Youth Mural Project (YMP) - gives young people the opportunity to create murals that are displayed in city parks and at the John Waldron Art Center. The youth work with a professional artist, who guides them through the creative process. All artwork displayed must be reviewed and approved by the YMP staff. The YMP has been successful not only as an artistic outlet, but also as a deterrent to graffiti. The City of Bloomington partnered with Rhinos and the YMP to spearhead a community-wide graffiti clean up program that has been lauded by city and county government as well as by local businesses. The recent renovation of People's Park, an YMP display location, affords us a great opportunity to promote youth art in Bloomington.

Thursday
3 to 6pm

Youth Radio - trains youth to produce a weekly radio show that airs on WHFB (91.3 and 98.1) every Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. The students meet every Thursday at Rhino's with Bloomington Parks and Recreation staff to train and produce the show. The studio makes it possible for the young people involved to not only train in a real station environment, but also to pre-produce segments and to produce remote broadcasts and interviews using the new equipment. Youth Radio currently serves approximately 30 participants weekly. The staff salaries are funded through the BPR non-reverting budget.

Friday

Club Management - a chance for the young people who are served by Rhino's to determine its direction and appearance. Youth listen to band submissions, make show suggestions, and even book and promote the shows themselves. The club's appearance and maintenance is also addressed at this time.

Weekday afternoons
3 to 6pm

Rhino's will also always be open from 3 to 6 in the afternoon for kids to just "hang out".

It is the mission of Rhino's Youth Center to provide entertainment and engagement for the youth of our community. The only rules for participation are no drugs, no alcohol, no tobacco, no firearms, and no fighting. These programs are open to all and are offered at no cost to the participant. The club, its programs, and its media studio will open to use by the youth of our community at other times as well. It is our hope that schools, youth groups and organizations, and others will avail themselves of the facilities that Rhino's offers.

Rhino's is a program of Harmony School and is supported by and/or partnered with The City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department, The Monroe County United Way, the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, H.U.D. Community Development Block Grants, The Monroe County CARES Board and the Governors Commission for a Drug Free Indiana, Smoke-Free Indiana, the Indiana Department of Commerce, the John Waldron Arts Center, WFHB, CATS, The Monroe County Youth Services Bureau, The Monroe County Developmental Assets Initiative, Monroe County Prevention Coalition, and many more private business and individuals.
