For this investigation, we limited our analytic sample to the 549 female participants from whom,we collected survey data in order to examine correlates of girls’ interest in pursuing college coursework in engineering, science, and mathematics. Detailed observations and audiotaped teacher and child language data were coded to measure content and quantity of verbal interactions in preschool classrooms. Preschool teachers' use of sophisticated vocabulary during free play predicted fourth-grade reading comprehension and word recognition (mean age=9; 7), with effects mediated by kindergarten child language measures (mean age=5; 6). In large group preschool settings, teachers' attention-getting utterances were directly related to later comprehension. Preschool teachers' correcting utterances and analytic talk about books, and early support in the home for literacy predicted fourth-grade vocabulary, as mediated by kindergarten receptive vocabulary.

We analyzed factors associated with ease of use in obtaining such services. We also explored what were specific difficulties or delays in receiving services. By examining data from the National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs (NS-CSHCN 2009-2010) and using the revised criteria for "ease of use," we were able to assess the percentage of parents who reported that their experiences seeking services for their children met those criteria. Methods We performed Chi square tests to examine associations between the independent variables and their relationship to the difficulties or delays assessed in the survey; including: eligibility, availability of services, waiting lists, cost, and access to information. We used logistic regression to determine the association of meeting the "ease of use" criteria with socio-demographic, complexity of need, and access variables. Results Overall, a third of families of CSHCN (35.3 %) encounter difficulties, delays, or frustrations in obtaining health and related services. The lack of access to health and community services in this study fell most heavily on children from racial/ethnic minority backgrounds, those in poverty, and those with complex emotional/behavioral or developmental needs and functional limitations. Conclusions for Practice CSHCN require services from a broad array of providers across multiple systems. Unfortunately, there are certain difficulties that hamper the accessibility of these systems. These findings underscore the need for both practice-level response and systems-level reform to ensure equitable distribution of health and community resources.

This mixed-method study of 1073 high school freshmen and sophomores in an urban district investigated the association between immigrant status and predictors of persistence in STEM. Immigrant students reported higher science and math self-concept, and higher engagement and grades in STEM subjects. Immigrant status was associated with increased odds of aspirations for college study in STEM as mediated by math self-concept. Interviews revealed family patterns of instrumental and emotional support for academic skills and interests in STEM.

Working within an ecological model, this research is anchored in a feminist social constructionist analysis. Sexual health is defined as the ability to know and accept one's own feelings and to make responsible and safe choices. In discussing sexual health and risk of unintended pregnancy, the focus is on attitudinal rather than behavioral factors of risk and health because only a small portion of this sample had engaged in sexual intercourse at the time of the survey. However, the level of sexual activity is described for the sample, and the relationship of those activities to femininity ideology (controlling for access to information and support around sexuality in their sociocultural context) is examined. Demographics of the sample (N.146) are provided, measures are described, results are discussed, and conclusions are presented. (Contains 1 figure, 4 tables, and 17 references.)

Research paper thumbnail of A qualitative study of clinicians' use of the cultural formulation model in assessing posttraumatic stress disorder

Transcultural Psychiatry, Sep 1, 2009

The Cultural Formulation of Diagnosis (CFD) Model of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) ... more The Cultural Formulation of Diagnosis (CFD) Model of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) provides a potential framework for improving the diagnostic assessment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in culturally diverse patients. We analyzed data from the Patient-Provider Encounter Study, a multisite study that examines the process of diagnosis and clinical decisionmaking during an initial clinical intake session, in order to examine use of CFD for PTSD diagnosis. We find that the use of the CFD in routine community settings is inconsistently or underutilized in practice, but when employed may assist the formulation and interpretation of traumatic experiences. We discuss the implications for improving the assessment of PTSD in the time-limited setting of the clinical intake encounter and across race/ethnicity.
