Overwintering Geometer larvae/ prepupal Prominent larva (original) (raw)
I have not been successful in the past rearing moths that overwinter as larvae. I'm in Northern New Jersey and I have been putting my pupae containers into the refrigerator on species I know will not eclose until 2025.
However, I have a few larvae that are not feeding but haven't pupated. Pine species not that much of an issue since that won't mold unless super damp. However, the ones found and reared on Goldenrod will. I think it might be a Carpet of some type. Any suggestions on what to do with it? Place an unrelated twig in the container or perhaps a skewer/tooth pick, or nothing at all? I also have a prominent that has been pre-pupal much longer than usual. It is still alive. No parasite yet which I'm assuming from experience, they would have emerged by now. It was reared on oak and the oak leaf is still in the container with it. Frig it or wait a bit longer? Any help is much appreciated. I hate to lose them after putting so much effort in :)
