Intergenerational Solidarity: the Societarian Model of Relational Sociology, 2019

The chapter discusses the intergenerational solidarity topic in the light of the societal model p... more The chapter discusses the intergenerational solidarity topic in the light of the societal model proposed by relational sociology. Within the relational perspective, family and intergenerational relationships play a pivotal role. Thus, the key aspects analysed are threefold. As first, the arising of issues related to the coexistence of different generations, and to their solidarity in post-modern societies, is presented. Consequently, definitions of the ‘generation’ and of the ‘solidarity’ concepts, according to relational sociology, are discussed. Finally, a review of societal models and of how they can contribute to promote and enhance intergenerational solidarity is analysed. The traditional roles played by the state and by the market, even when addressed toward the de-commodification of welfare assets, have reinforced instead of reducing the disruptive pressures on intergenerational solidarity. In light of this critique, as the way to better promote intergenerational solidarity relational sociology proposes a ‘complex subsidiarity’ model. It’s a model within which families and civil society organisations are provided with an enhanced role in comparison with the roles that other societal models assign to them. Moreover, the model also brings more attention to the complex intertwinement between welfare settings and the nature of generations, family structures, solidarity cultures, and the roles played by generations. Nonetheless, as the critical review presented in the paper shows, the reform proposals of welfare institutions in light of the insights of relational sociology need to be put in dialogue with other sociological paradigms, and need to be operationalised.

The family is not only the fundamental group unit of society, but is also the fundamental agent f... more The family is not only the fundamental group unit of society, but is also the fundamental agent for sustainable, social, economic and cultural development. 2014 is an important year for the family as it is the twentieth anniversary of the International Year of the Family proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1994. 2014 is also important for us because we commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Institute of Advanced Family Studies at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya. For these two reasons, we decided to promote the edition of this volume on a topic of great importance and relevance. The family is a cornerstone to achieve a sustainable development of society through the Millennium Development Goals proposed by United Nations. At the same time, family also occupies a central place in the development strategy of the European Commission for Europe 2020 (Europe 2020 Growth Strategy). The achievement of these goals, especially those related with the eradication of poverty, education of children, especially girls, and reduction in maternal mortality, depends on how families are empowered to fulfill their numerous functions. Families are at the center of sustainable development and it is important to ensure that families are an integral part of the post 2015 development agenda. In this book, the authors stress the importance of designing, implementing and monitoring family-oriented policies, especially in the areas of poverty eradication, full employment and decent work, work family balance and social integration, the promotion of healthy intra-family relations and intergenerational solidarity. The Research Agenda of United Nations raises the importance of addressing complex issues such as the family from a multidisciplinary perspective. It is for this reason that this book had this perspective from the first moment. More than twenty scholars from around the world and from various scientific fields and disciplines such as economics, social sciences, law, and education among others have contributed to this book, discussing the importance of the family as an agent for social change and sustainable development. Their contributions have been divided into two parts. The first contributions address the family as an element of economic and social development, while the second part examines the role of the family as a basis for the human capital formation. Since the beginning of its activities, the Institute of Advanced Family Studies has focused on the family in general, and more specifically on family policies. The aim of the Institute is to conduct research, teaching and dissemination of knowledge. The publication of this book is the result of one of the lines of the IsFamily Santander Chair on family solidarity, created in 2013 with the support of Banco Santander, entity known for its high level of commitment to universities through the Santander University program. The studies that are carried out under the Is Family Chair have a cross-disciplinary perspective and consider the family to be a field in which resources are transferred between generations, focusing on three of its fundamental aspects: the economy, healthcare and caring for people, and education. One of aims of the IsFamily Chair is to generate scientific knowledge and actions in order to propose social policies that will facilitate families being able to undertake these intergenerational processes.

However, the report is also aimed at those conducting social studies on family in Spain and Europe. The work seeks to promote discussion in the UIC and amongst the scientific community around the results — which are set out descriptively — and thus generate more research leading to scientific publications in diverse disciplines. We have therefore set out our research methodology in detail in a specific section of this report.

The origin of the commitment towards these topics was the solicitation raised from the decision of the European Union to establish the year 2012 as the European Year of Active Aging and Solidarity between Generations. Following this solicitation, in Italy, the Università Cattolica took up the challenge by funding the research entitled “Non mi ritiro - L’allungamento della vita: una sfida per le generazioni, un’opportunità per la società” (2012-2014). Later, in Spain, the IESF (thanks to Santander Universidades) has activated a Chair dedicated to long-term study on the theme of intergenerational solidarity and the family (2013-2020). The main output of the Chair was the research titled “Older Parents, Generations and Family Solidarity. A Multilevel Analysis of the Spanish Context”. The contributions of the present volume develop reflections from an intergenerational perspective, both at a theoretical-conceptual level and as a product of empirical analyses based on research carried out in Italy and Spain.

This point of view enriches the literature on mumpreneurs’ motivation that usually centres on classical elements such as push & pull factors and constrains. This point of view enriches the literature on mumpreneurs’ motivation that usually centres on classical elements such as push & pull factors and constrains. The Relational Perspective indeed allows for understanding the framework of different factors and the plurality of subjects involved in the phenomenon (the woman, the relationship with her partner, the belonging to a familiar networking…). It discovers the complexity at stake, which refers as an emerging effect, to the process of construction of personal identity, based on a deep exercise of reflexivity and strong relational dimension

Sustainbility, which could be defined as the ability of a life system o survive, has been a key concept in agriculture, econmy, and ecology, but not explicitly regarding the family. hus, editing a book called Family and Sustainable Developent is an important challenge and a unique opportunity o present, define and integrate both terms. EnglishIntegrity is one of the more commented values on Business Ethics. In order to do that, we initially developed a scale with six dimensions. Using the theoretical framework of Bengtson and his colleagues (1991), we measured five out of the six conceptual dimensions of the IFS, together with a new one developed by us and called systematic solidarity. Furthermore, items about partner are introduced in the questionnaire. Using a sample of 201 valid questionnaires, different analyses were conducted to validate the new scale. The definitive scale proposed to measure IFS was composed by four dimensions: normative solidarity and three affectual solidarities (related to parents, partner, and children). Finally, we provide evidences of the consistency of this scale across gender differences.

Literature of the last years shows that everybody considers integrity as fundamental. Nonetheless we chance upon a paradox: there are lots of references to integrity, but nobody explains what integrity it is. A thorough review of the literature allows us to identify four common characteristics in the different ways of understanding integrity. These are justice, consistence, upright principles and upright motivation. On the basis of Aristotelic Ethics we can find the comprehensive meaning of integrity.
