However, may a state be considered irrational when their actions are based on historical accuracies that have generated rational fears? After analyzing the years of foreign occupation and foreign intervention, civil war, and economic turmoil, it becomes evident that North Korean behavior is simply a rational reaction to a complex history.

International relations scholars claim that the patterns and characteristics of armed conflict ar... more International relations scholars claim that the patterns and characteristics of armed conflict are changing and that ideology has become less significant as a factor shaping world politics. This paper offers a new assessment of the role and continued importance of ideology in the analysis of war. Moreover, this paper acknowledges that religion and ethnicity profoundly influence a state"s cultural identity, affecting attitudes about war in ways especially relevant to regional and intrastate conflicts. Within this essay, I conduct a case study analyzing the ethnic and religious conflicts that occurred in Rwanda during the twentieth century in order to assess how these conflicts influenced political ideology in Rwanda. Ideology, however, remains as powerful force in world politics and may be relevant to regional and ethnic conflicts in ways not fully appreciated.
