The number of newspaper articles about religion increased steadily. Underrepresentation of Christianity suggested by previous studies was not found, but a prejudicial tone toward different religions was identified.

Based on studies in JMR and other sources, three research approaches are identified: (1) The Proliferation of Mediated Religion, or the idea that media are creating multiple places of worship beyond the physical walls of traditional congregations, (2) Religious Audiences as Interpretive Communities, where shared interpretations of popular media content are increasingly important in understanding religious groups, and (3) Media Criticism drawing on the cultural aspects of religion in critiquing media genres and texts. A dominant theme across the three approaches is that individuals are increasingly willing to have religious experiences through media of popular culture. The numinous is recommended as an integrative concept to facilitate research of new forms of mediated religion.

Museums are sites of contested meaning that bring together artifacts of the other with the sense-... more Museums are sites of contested meaning that bring together artifacts of the other with the sense-making practices of patrons. The Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit in Charlotte, North Carolina exemplifies a similar struggle as patrons negotiate between appeals to the authority of science and appeals to the authority of the Bible. Our analysis demonstrates that religion*rather than class struggle*permeates the encoding and decoding practices there. This struggle is exacerbated in part because of the religious nature of the artifacts on display; and also because when read as a text, the site's latent discourse reinforces the collective belief among many Evangelical Christians in the accuracy of the Bible. Furthermore, the exhibit's public relations campaign, its layout and design, and the predominantly Christian background of its guests coalesce to amplify a sense of the numinous.

In this special issue of the Journal of Media and Religion we explore the religious experience of... more In this special issue of the Journal of Media and Religion we explore the religious experience of four seminal theorists: Jacques Ellul, Marshall McLuhan, Walter Ong, and Neil Postman. Studying the sacred dimension of a scholar’s life not only allows us to examine ideas within the rich context of personal and cultural experience but also introduces us to the method of cultural biography, which has great promise in the study of media and religion. The biographical method suggests that a theory is best understood by casting the widest of nets over the experiences of the theorist. This process is valuable in media studies, because our understanding of how religion influences the field is not as developed as it is in other disciplines where this phenomenon has a longer history of scholarship (e.g., sociology of religion, psychology of religion, cultural anthropology, and moral criticism in the humanities). In this introduction, I briefly introduce the four biographical articles and their authors. I then suggest some of the ways cultural biography might be useful in the study of media and religion. The first article, “Jacques Ellul’s Conversions and Protestant Theology,” is by Clifford G. Christians of the University of Illinois; he argues that dialectical thinking about sociology and theology is key in comprehending Ellul’s scholarship. Ellul was oneof the20thcentury’smost influentialphilosophers, andhiswritingsonthe“technological society” are salient in the literature of mass communication and cultural criticism in general. Although Ellul never reconciled Marxism and biblical thought, JOURNAL OF MEDIA AND RELIGION, 5(3), 141–146 Copyright © 2006, Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc.
