We help reduce GHG emissions and strengthen the competitiveness of new and existing industries in Alberta.
About us
ERA receives grants from government to fulfil our mandate. This funding comes from Alberta’s large emitters who choose to pay into the Climate Change and Emissions Management Fund as a compliance option if they are unable to meet emissions reduction targets. For a decade and a half, our clean technology investments have helped innovators develop and demonstrate Alberta-based technologies that reduce emissions, lower costs, attract investment, and create jobs in Alberta. Mandate To identify and accelerate innovative solutions that secure Alberta’s success in a lower carbon economy. Vision Alberta is recognized as an innovation and technology leader in a lower carbon world. To achieve its vision and mandate, ERA will: Reduce GHG emissions - Fund innovative solutions that result in meaningful greenhouse gas emissions reductions in Alberta and contribute to a lower carbon world. Advance innovation system priorities - Leverage our strengths to contribute to critical climate change innovation priorities in Alberta. Measure and communicate success - Define and report on metrics to demonstrate results. Achieve operational excellence - Strive for excellence in operations and efficiency while maintaining responsiveness to stakeholders and funders. Our portfolio of funded projects: http://ERAlberta.ca/projects ERA is a registered tradename of the Climate Change and Emissions Management (CCEMC) Corporation.

Farewell COP29 Azerbaijan. It was a full and productive week. This has been one of the best organized COP’s I have been to and was impressed with the logistics and all the volunteers for this massive event. Key takeaways: 👉This finance focused COP established key operational standards for an international carbon trading system - an important step but much more work to be done to operarionationalize. 👉Many countries are high on aspiration to decarbonize but all are challenged on how to finance and get big decarbonization projects to final investment decision. 👉For private capital to be more readily deployed on new clean technology, financial risk parameters and evaluations need to updated and draw from global learnings. 👉While many are talking about how and what to decarbonize, Alberta is actually doing it in a number of areas. Demonstrating leadership through its policies, funding and entrepreneurial risk taking by industry. Team Alberta showed very well in Baku. Industry, government and technology funders demonstrated true collaboration and a “community” approach to emissions reduction in all our panel sessions and meetings. While we have a ways to go - we are getting stuff done. - Learn more about the Advanced Materials Challenge funding competition at ERA’s informational webinar on Wednesday, November 27 from 1-2 p.m. (MDT). The Advanced Materials Challenge is focused on technology solutions that can shape the circular economy and create low emissions products. Join Justin Riemer, ERA’s CEO, Christophe Owttrim, Executive Director of Technology and Innovation, and Isabella T., Technology Investment Lead, as they provide an overview of the funding opportunity, including scope and eligibility of the call, the submission process, and timelines for decisions. Participants will also have the chance to ask specific questions to help prepare an application. Register today: https://lnkd.in/gmUPx7Qf #ERAFunded #ABTech #TIERfund Government of Alberta
- Alberta is a national leader in the production of manufactured goods and materials—and has a significant opportunity to reduce emissions in the material supply chain. ERA’s $40 million Advanced Materials Challenge is available for technologies and solutions related to the extraction, production, manufacturing, performance improvement, and circular lifecycle of new and existing material products in Alberta. “Enhancing existing products and developing new materials with superior performance while embracing circular economy strategies will help deliver deeper emissions reductions, enhance supply chain resiliency, and strengthen industrial competitiveness. This funding, sourced from Alberta’s TIER regulation, is critical and the possibilities are endless,” said Justin Riemer, CEO, Emissions Reduction Alberta Eligible applicants include innovators, technology developers, municipalities, Indigenous communities, associations, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), research and development organizations, universities, not-for-profit organizations, and more. The application deadline is Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at 5 p.m. (MDT) and an informational webinar will be held on Wednesday, November 27 from 1-2 p.m. (MDT). - This Alberta-based company leveled-up their manufacturing plant with an energy review. Orion Plastics Inc. is Canada’s largest sheet extrusion company with a 63,000 square foot manufacturing plant in St. Albert, Alberta. A few years ago, Orion conducted an energy efficiency review to reduce energy waste and increase the level of energy awareness on their operations team. With the energy review, Orion implemented the following game-changing initiatives: ✅ They created a new Metric Board System to track energy outputs on each production line, ✅ They converted all the plant’s lights to LED, and ✅ They developed a training module for employee education, customized to their operations. Within one year, these changes helped Orion decrease their energy usage by 7% and reduce their gas usage by 17.7%. This project was funded by the Government of Alberta and is an example of the type of technology that could be funded through ERA’s newest program, Strategic Energy Management for Industry (SEMI). Yesterday at COP29 Azerbaijan, ERA and Government of Alberta co-hosted a panel, "Building on success: What the world can learn from Alberta's methane emission reductions strategy". Thank you to Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, Rebecca Schulz, for moderating, and to our panelists who provided thoughtful insight into some of the work already being done in Alberta (Justin Riemer, John Adams, Stephane Germain, and Scott Volk). Watch the panel recording: https://lnkd.in/gfM6x4NJFollowing the panel, we announced our latest Advanced Materials Challenge, which will provide up to $40 million to shape the circular economy and create low emissions products. To conclude the event, the Minister sat down with ERA Board Chair Kelly Ogle for a fireside chat. The conversation touched on Alberta's strategies for industrial decarbonization, focusing on policies, investments, and standout projects.
