A photon detector model designed, assembled and programmed at the Institute for Quantum Computing was boosted into space last week and will stay on the International Space Station for up to a year. There it will be used for quantum entanglement science experiments as part of the Space Entanglement and Annealing Quantum Experiment (SEAQUE) implemented by an international consortium under leadership from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. “It will be very exciting to follow the results from the SEAQUE experiments conducted in space,” says Dr. Thomas Jennewein, IQC affiliate and professor in Waterloo’s Department of Physics and Astronomy. “We know from lab tests that laser annealing of radiated detectors is very effective, but the space environment brings some interesting challenges due to the high laser powers. The Undergraduate School on Experimental Quantum Information Processing (USEQIP) hosted 380 program alumni to date and many continue working and studying in the field of #quantum information processing. USEQIP provides an in-depth, hands-on opportunity to explore the theory and implementation of quantum information science and technology, including lectures from IQC professors and experiments in our Quantum Explorations Space. USEQIP 2013 student Thomas Alexander is now quantum error correction infrastructure developer at IBM Quantum. “It is not an exaggeration to say that attending USEQIP was one of the key opportunities that enabled the career I have today in quantum computing. USEQIP provided me with opportunities to learn about quantum computing from experts who were otherwise not available to me, and in them, I found a passion for the field.” USEQIP 2025 will be held from May 26 to June 6, 2025.
