- Our Makers KUbe mockup at last year's Mass Timber Conference was quite the hit! We are excited to return again this year, featuring a mockup focused on mass timber seismic design. Stay tuned for more đ Reminiscing on last year, our engineers worked with BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group to imagine a mass timber structure with no steel connections or fasteners â all wood. The resulting full-scale structural mockup featured at the 2024 Mass Timber Conference uses an exterior Glulam diagrid achieved with 100% wood connections. This mockup of the larger KUbe features part of the Glulam diagrid, the architecturally expressive âHero Nodeâ, and a section of the L2 floor plate. Notably, the diagrid connections are designed as all-wood, inspired by traditional Japanese joinery, and required a high-level of precision in detailing and fabrication. Our structural design was entirely modeled in Branch 3D, fabricated in our shop by master carpenters, and erected in just 8 hours. We look forward to meeting you in Portland on March 25-27 at Booth 544 - come learn about the latest in structural engineering, tall timber, and seismic design! - We're honoured to announce that Dr. Justin Brown and Dr. Wenchen Dong of StructureCraft have been welcomed as Affiliate Faculty at the Idaho State University College of Science and Engineering, in close collaboration with Professor Mustafa Mashal. Justin and Wenchen will bring a wealth of expertise to the faculty, with a focus on research & development and structural and earthquake engineering focused in the area of wood and hybrid-wood design. Justin Brown obtained his PhD in the seismic design of CLT shear wall systems from the University of Canterbury and has led significant engineering projects for StructureCraft, including the Johns Hopkins University Student Center and T3 Minneapolis. He has extensive experience in material research and mass timber seismic design, and currently serves as a sub-committee member on the CSA 086 code committee. Wenchen Dong has long experience working as a researcher, having completed his PhD in the seismic performance of glulam frames with BRBs, also at the University of Canterbury. He since has worked at UCL developing innovative recycled timber products, and joined StructureCraft two years ago as a mainstay of our Research & Development team. StructureCraft is excited to bolster our relationships with academia in the US through these and other key appointments, such as our Seattle office Director Leif Johnson's recent involvement at the University of Washington as a Visiting Professor.#StructuralEngineering #IdahoStateUniversity #Faculty #SeismicDesign #ShearWalls

The Retail Village at Sycamore & Oak is not only a beautiful example of a mass timber pavilion, but one of our 2024 Wood in Architecture Award winners. Designed by Adjaye Associates (design architect) and Winstanley Architects & Planners (AOR), this mass timber project was specially designed so that it can eventually be dismantled and reassembled at a new location, with plans for it to be a community cornerstone regardless of where it resides. If you are an architect or engineer who has a mass timber, light-frame, or hybrid building located in the U.S., then consider nominating it for a 2025 Wood in Architecture Award! Submissions are open until January 25, 2025: https://lnkd.in/grhgXVnj Quality Buildings LLC StructureCraft Emerson Collective Redbrick LMD - designboom: Nancy Pauw Pedestrian Bridge's timber arch spans over Bow River in Canada "The Nancy Pauw Bridge, designed by StructureCraft, fulfills a century-old vision for Banff, Canada, by connecting Central Park to the Banff Recreation Grounds. Spanning 80 meters, this innovative timber arch bridge provides striking views of the Rocky Mountains and a graceful crossing over the Bow River. During its first summer, it welcomed over 300,000 users, showcasing ambitious design and construction. Banffâs newest pedestrian bridge connects key social infrastructure while serving as a destination itself. Like its sister bridge downstream, the Nancy Pauw Bridge features an 80m clear span, constructed using stepped Glulam girders and weathering steel haunches. This slender yet robust structure harmonizes with its surroundings, offering uninterrupted views while maintaining environmental integrity. The bridge represents the realization of a 108-year-old plan initially envisioned in 1914. Thanks to a private donation from the Wim and Nancy Pauw Foundation, this long-held dream became a reality on September 6, 2022, with hundreds attending its grand opening." -designboom Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ew3Ae5W2

Commissioned for Canadaâs centenary, the original National Arts Centre | Centre national des Arts building was completed in 1969. Like contemporary projects such as London's Barbican or New Yorkâs Lincoln Center, the building was cut off from its urban context and was designed with the mindset that arts performance is reserved for the elite. To create a more accessible and inviting public space, the NAC rejuvenation introduces a sequence of lobbies and audience spaces, constructed in mass timber, to mend the connection to the Ottawa streetscape and the adjacent Confederation Square. The new sequence of arrival and gathering spaces on the north side of the NAC unfold under a wave of gently billowing wood coffers. Fred Lebensoldâs original 1969 design, with more than one hundred thousand square meters of concrete laid out within a carefully controlled triangular grid, established the powerful character and geometry that defined the design of this timber ceiling. Lebensoldâs formal logic, drawn from his admiration of Alexander Graham Bellâs tetrahedral kites, is reinterpreted at all scales through prefabricated mass timber forms and high-performance glazing. Repeating triangular and hexagonal motifs, sympathetic to the original Brutalist concrete aesthetic, infuse the space with natural warmth and light. Working with Fast + Epp, renowned for their expertise with mass timber, we designed long-span trusses assembled from the repeating triangular coffer forms, composed of mass timber beams with steel knife-plate connections. This lightweight structure permitted the reuse of some of the existing foundations, and building with mass timber resulted in a low-embodied carbon design. Prefabrication of these mass timber elements produced by StructureCraft expedited on-site assembly and minimized construction disruptions. The National Arts Centreâs âTimber Cascadeâ is featured in our new book Set Pieces which offers a visual exploration of the firmâs designs for some of the worldâs most remarkable performing arts venues. Leif Johnson, Structural Engineering Director at StructureCraft, will join the Department of Architecture at the University of Washington College of Built Environments as a Visiting Professor for the Barry Onouye Endowed Studio in 2025. The studio, named after the longtime structures instructor and textbook author, investigates the role of structure in architectural design under the tutelage of an invited structural engineer. In collaboration with Associate Professor Tyler Sprague, Leif will guide Master of Architecture students in designing and constructing a full-scale timber prototype. This project will push the boundaries of mass timber connections, tackling challenges like material behavior, fabrication, and steel reduction to create innovative, sustainable solutions. Read more here: https://onouye.be.uw.edu/Follow along as the studio builds a demonstration structure on the north lawn of Gould Hall, showcasing the integration of architecture and structure in mass timber design! A testament to the resiliency of our structural design, the visitor center weathered Typhoon Yagi's Category 5 wind forces with ease last September - the only damage being a few of the 350,000 red cedar shingles peeling off. Yagi was one of the strongest typhoon's that the Hainan province has ever faced. The roof structure is a combination of three different doubly curved free form roofs overlaying each other, with spans as long as 25m and cantilevers as much as 12m. Each is a unique roof shaped by dual lines of singly curved glulam beams and straight purlins, all modelled with 3D software. To achieve the double curvature as simply as possible, the purlins were spaced and staggered to fit onto the drop beams, and the plywood diaphragm was applied in two thin layers with wood strapping to support the cedar shingles. Lateral support for the roof is provided by both the adjacent concrete structures as well as steel V-bracing, strategically located near roof intersections, to minimize visual impact.#Resiliency #Typhoon #WindEngineering #StructuralEngineering #China #Hainan
