- As we embark on a 10-year ambition to transform the GTA into a region where everyone can thrive, we are thrilled to launch our new campaign: Any way we can. Four simple words that mean so much. A promise to do whatever it takes, with all the tools in our toolbox, to fight local poverty and ensure everyone, in every neighbourhood, has everything they need to build a good life. It will not be easy, but fueled by the power of community, we will strengthen essential services, scale innovative solutions, and secure community spaces so they are there, close to home to meet urgent and emerging needs. Together, with grit and fierce determination, we will roll up our sleeves and build a stronger GTA for all, where everyone can thrive. #AnyWayWeCan 💌 Learn more about our new campaign https://bit.ly/3Bf5Zw1

A fabulous time was had at our Women United: Real Talk, Real Action event. Thank you to all who joined us to hear more about how we are working to ensure women and their families across the GTA have the supports they need to thrive. It was a wonderful evening together, discussing the impact we can have in community and enjoying our mini-market featuring local agencies like Inspirations Studio, a United Way-supported ceramics program benefiting women and gender diverse people who have experienced poverty, homelessness and housing instability. Special thanks to our Women United Co-Chairs Christine Lonsdale, Partner, McCarthy Tétrault LLP, and Alison James, Senior Vice President, Technology Transformation Office, Canada Life, as well as McCarthy Tétrault LLP for hosting us at their space. - #UWGTBlog | With costs of living in the GTA skyrocketing, too many residents are being forced to choose between paying rent and basic necessities. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Learn how United Way is working with partners across our region to keep people housed and neighbourhoods welcoming through supportive housing initiatives, like our Social Medicine Initiative, in partnership with University Health Network and City of Toronto. - From housing and food insecurity to precarious employment and mental health challenges, there are many challenges facing people in the GTA, and we can’t fight poverty without fighting all of them. Having leaders like Alaina Teeuwsen, VP of Strategic Communications at BMO Capital Markets, stand with us means we can tackle these interconnected challenges, and we are so grateful for her support. Alaina is a member of our Community Campaign Cabinet, a group of dedicated, extraordinary volunteers who are working with us to fight poverty and build a better GTA for everyone. - More than 1 in 10 Torontonians are dependent on #foodbanks to make ends meet. That’s a 36% ⬆️ in unique clients compared to last year, according to the #WhosHungry2024 report. As part of the research committee, we know there’s never been a more important time to raise our voices and take action to tackle poverty and food insecurity. Learn more about the findings and recommendations: https://lnkd.in/d9xjujiN
The findings in our #WhosHungry2024 report all show that food banks are at a breaking point and more and more people are turning to emergency services for the first time. This annual report, that we publish in partnership with North York Harvest Food Bank, examines food insecurity and poverty in Toronto. We uncovered the following: ➡️ Toronto food banks served 3.49 million client visits - this is the highest annual increase ever reported and represents a 273% increase since pre-pandemic. ➡️ Almost 155,000 new individuals started using food bank services for the first time. ➡️ We saw a 420% increase in unhoused food bank clients. ➡️ There was a 90% in food bank clients from emergency shelters. The crushing costs of housing, food, and other basic needs, paired with insufficient income supports and wages, are pushing far too many households into poverty, yet governments are failing to ensure every person living in Canada can live a life of dignity. This is why our report is a call to action with recommendations for each level of government as well as actions the public can take to eliminate hunger in our communities.
