Multisystem security, which using two or more types of security levels like for example using identification password and card, can increase the security of a system, however it is not an ideal security system. Password maybe hacked or forgotten, and Identification card is something we have and could be stolen. This chapter proposes a cascaded multimodal biometric system using fingerprint and iris recognition based on minutiae extraction for fingerprint identification and encoding the log-Gabor filtering for iris recognition. The experiments compare FAR, FRR, and accuracy evaluation metrics for a unimodal biometric system based on either fingerprint or iris and the cascaded multimodal biometric system that sequentially utilizes the fingerprint and iris traits. The proposed system has FAR = 0, FRR = 0.057, and accuracy 99.86%. The results show the superior performance of the proposed multimodal system compared to the unimodal system.

To specify feature points in tow images, the user interface takes up much time and it allows the warping specification by the user which represents very tedious work. In this paper, we propose a semi-automatic algorithm based on active contour model to specify the feature correspondence between two given images. It allows a user to extract a contour that defines a facial features such as lips, mouth, profile, etc., by specifying only ...

Water pollution by organic materials or metals is one of the problems that threaten humanity, both nowadays and over the next decades. Morphological changes in Nile Tilapia "Oreochromis niloticus" fish liver and gills can also represent the adaptation strategies to maintain some physiological functions or to assess acute and chronic exposure to chemicals found in water and sediments. This paper presents an automatic system for assessing water quality, in Sharkia Governorate - Egypt, based on microscopic images of fish gills and liver. The proposed system used fish gills and liver as hybrid-biomarker in order to detect water pollution. It utilized case-based reasoning (CBR) for indicating the degree of water quality based on the different histopathological changes in fish gills and liver microscopic images. Various performance evaluation metrics namely, retrieval accuracy, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, F-measure, and G-mean have been used in order to objectively indicate the true performance of the system considering the unbalanced data. Experimental results showed that the proposed hybrid-biomarker CBR based system achieved water quality prediction accuracy of 97.9% using cosine distance similarity measure. Also, it outperformed both SVMs and LDA classifiers for the tested microscopic images dataset.

It is found that the fluid deformation algorithm gives a good registration at the expense of spatial blurring. By applying elastic body splines to landmarks created automatically within the fluid algorithm, an improved performance is achieved.

This paper presents a handwritten Arabic character recognition system based on Particle Swarm Optimization with random Forests. The main objective of the proposed system is to improve the recognition rate and reduce the feature set size. The proposed system is trained and tested by a well-known classifier; Random forests (RF) on CENPRMI dataset. The proposed optimization algorithm obtained promising results in terms of classification accuracy as the proposed system is able to recognize 91.66 % of our test set correctly, as well as, it reduced the computational time. When comparing our results with other related works we find that our results is the highest among other published results.

Breast MRI involves the use of magnetic resonance imaging to look specifically at the breast. Contrast-enhanced breast MRIs acquired by contrast injection have been shown to be very sensitive in the detection of breast cancer, but are also time-consuming and cause waste of medical resources. This paper utilizes the use of type-II fuzzy sets to enhance the contrast of the breast MRI image. To evaluate the performance of our approach, we run ...

The estimation of the semantic similarity between words provides a valuable method to enable the understanding of texts. In the field of biomedical domains, using Ontologies have been very effective due to their scalability and efficiency. In this paper, we aim to cluster and classify medical thesis data to better discover the commonalities between theses data and hence, improve the accuracy of the similarity estimation which in return improves the scientific research sector. Experimental evaluations using 4,878 theses data set in the medical sector at Cairo University indicate that the proposed approach yields results that correlate more closely with human assessments than other by using the standard ontology (MeSH). Two different algorithms were used; the first is Lexical similarity and then applying K-means clustering and the second is fuzzy Euclidean distance clustering algorithm after using MeSH ontology on medical theses data for better categorization of the keywords within the data.
