The HPLC studies of the extracted saponin showed the peak at retention time 5.19 min. was is matched with the standard saponin with total amount 34.87%. Significant improvements were detected in the tumor markers, complete blood count, antioxidant system, liver function and kidney function of HaS-treated mice. The present study demonstrated that HaS is a potent natural product that has promising antineoplastic efficacy.

Nephrotoxicity is one of the most common kidney problems and occurs when the body is exposed to a drug or toxin. The aim of this study is to assess the antioxidant activity of Holothuria atra extract (HaE) against nephrotoxicity induced by 7, 12-dimethylbenz (a) anthracene (DMBA). Fifty male Wistar albino rats were assigned into two main groups, the pre-treated group (25 rats) and post-treated group (25 rats). Each group divided into 5 subgroups; healthy control (received 1ml distilled water daily prior to a single dose of corn oil), DMBA groups (received 1ml distilled water for 7 and 14 days prior to or after a single dosage of 15 mg/ kg body weight DMBA) and HaE treated groups (received 1ml HaE at a dosage of 200 mg/kg body weight, orally for 7 and 14 days prior to or after a single dosage of 15 mg/ kg body weight DMBA). The nephrotoxic effect of DMBA was assessed by the significant incre...

Marine organisms from the Mediterranean Coast of Egypt are considered potential sources of bioactive molecules. The present study was undertaken to explore the curative effects of Holothuria arenicola extract (HaE) against renal injury induced by bile duct ligation in male albino rats. Fifty four male Wistar albino rats were assigned into two main groups, the Sham-operated control (received distilled water only for 28 days) and bile duct ligated (BDL) group, which divided into 2 subgroups, animals of these subgroups treated for 28 consecutive days as follow: Subgroup I (BDL), rats of this subgroup administered distilled water orally. Subgroup II, animals of this subgroup treated orally with HaE (200 mg/kg body weight). BDL induced marked alteration on renal functions as manifested by a significant increase in the kidney function markers, serum creatin...

Ch... more Bile duct ligation (BDL) is a well established experimental model of extrahepatic cholestasis. Cholestasis leads to progressive liver injury culminating in cirrhosis and liver failure. Prolonged cholestasis, characterized by retention of bile compound, may cause renal damage, which sometimes leads to renal failure. The present study aimed to elucidate the curative effect of sepia ink extract against cholestasis induced renal and lipid metabolism disturbances. Fifty-four male Wistar albino rats (Rattus norvegicus) were divided into two main groups, the Sham-operated control (18 rats) and bile duct ligated (BDL) group (36 rats). BDL groups were treated orally with sepia ink extract (200 mg/kg body weight) for 7, 14, and 28 days. The underlying physiological studies were investigated using lipid profile, kidney function tests and histopathological examination. There was a significant decrease in total lipids, triglycerides, cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol in addition to kidney function tests; urea, uric acid and creatinine of BDL group after treated with ink extract. The histopathological examination of the kidney treated with ink extract revealed mild degeneration in renal tissue architecture, as compared to BDL groups. In conclusion, sepia ink extract provides an antioxidant capacity in vitro and curative strategy against the kidney dysfunctions induced by BDL. Hence there is a great demand for the development of agents with potent antioxidant effect. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the efficacy of Holothuria atra extract (HaE) as an antioxidant against 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene-(DMBA-) induced hepatorenal dysfunction. Experimental animals were divided into two main groups: protective and curative. Each group was then divided into five subgroups pre-or posttreated either with distilled water (DMBA subgroups) or with HaE (200 mg/kg body weight) for seven and fourteen days. Single oral administration of DMBA (15 mg/kg body weight) to Wistar rats resulted in a significant increase in the serum liver enzymes and kidney function's parameters. DMBA increased level of liver malondialdehyde (MDA), decreased levels of reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) in the liver tissue, and induced liver histopathological alterations. Pre-or posttreatment with HaE orally for 14 days significantly reversed the hepatorenal alterations induced following DMBA administration. In conclusion, HaE exhibits good hepatoprotective, curative, and antioxidant potential against DMBA-induced hepatorenal dysfunction in rats that might be due to decreased free radical generation.
