In Egypt, infants and young children face overlapping forms of malnutrition, including micronutrient deficiencies, stunting and overweight. Yet, in this setting, little is known about the factors associated with growth during the first year of life. A rise in stunting in Lower Egypt from 2005 to 2008 prompted this implementation research study, which followed a longitudinal cohort of infants from birth to 1 year of age within the context of a USAID-funded maternal and child health integrated programme. We sought to determine if growth patterns and factors related to early growth differed in Lower and Upper Egypt, and examined the relationship between weight loss and subsequent stunting at 12 months of age. Growth patterns revealed that length-forage z-score (LAZ) decreased and weight-for-length z-score (WLZ) increased from 6 to 12 months of age in both regions. One-quarter of infants were stunted and nearly one-third were overweight by 12 months of age in lower Egypt. Minimum dietary diversity was significantly associated with WLZ in Lower Egypt (β = 0.22, P < 0.05), but not in Upper Egypt. Diarrhoea, fever and programme exposure were not associated with any growth outcome. Weight loss during any period was associated with a twofold likelihood of stunting at 12 months in Lower Egypt, but not Upper Egypt. In countries, like Egypt, facing the nutrition transition, infant and young child nutrition programmes need to address both stunting and overweight through improving dietary quality and reducing reliance on energy-dense foods.

This study utilized the trials of improved practices (TIPs) methodology to gain an understanding of the cultural beliefs and perceptions related to feeding practices of infants and young children 0-23 months of age and used this information to work in tandem with 150 mothers to implement feasible solutions to feeding problems in Lower and Upper Egypt. The study triangulated in-depth interviews (IDIs) with mothers participating in TIPs, with IDIs with 40 health providers, 40 fathers and 40 grandmothers to gain an understanding of the influence and importance of the role of other caretakers and health providers in supporting these feeding practices. Study findings reveal high consumption of junk foods among toddlers, increasing in age and peaking at 12-23 months of age. Sponge cakes and sugary bi...

The reaction time curves of the pseudo first-order plots were of inverted S-shape throughout the entire course of reaction. The initial rates were found to be relatively slow in the early stages, followed by an increase in the oxidation rates over longer time periods. The experimental results indicated first-order kinetics in permanganate and fractional second-order dependence with respect to CMC concentration in either the induction or autoacceleration periods. Kinetic evidences for the formation of 1:2 intermediate complexes were revealed in both stages. The influence of the [H + ] on the reaction rates showed that the oxidation reactions are acid-catalyzed in both stages. Added salts indicated that Mn III and/or Mn IV play an important role in the reaction kinetics. The kinetic parameters have been evaluated and a reaction mechanism consistent with the experimental kinetics is suggested.

Design/methodology/approach -The content analysis approach to examine the information cited by the largest Egyptian companies is used in their web sites. The paper modifies and uses the disclosure index of Xiao et al. Ordinary least square multiple regression analysis is used to examine the determinants of the internet reporting. Findings -It is found that 56 per cent of Egyptian companies report a significant portion of information on their web sites. In addition, the paper finds that some financial characteristics explain the variation in the degree of internet reporting between Egyptian listed companies. In particular, profitability, foreign listing and industrial type (communications and financial services) are the determinants of the amount and presentation formatting of information disclosed on Egyptian companies' web sites. However, other firm characterises, such as firm size, leverage, liquidity and auditor size, do not explain corporate internet reporting. Practical implications -The research finding is essential as it assists in informing regulators about the characteristics of Egyptian companies that are, and are not, satisfying national and international investors' demand of updated/online information. It also assists current and potential stakeholders to know the drives of corporate internet reporting in Egypt. Consequently, they may further investigate and verify such reporting practices. In practice, online reporting can be used as an effective tool for improving stakeholders' decision-making process. Therefore, further research can be undertaken to examine the degree to which online reporting provides value-relevant information for stakeholders. Originality/value -To the best of the knowledge, there is no study examining the potential drivers of internet corporate reporting practice in Egypt. This paper is the first to examine the potential factors affecting corporate internet reporting in Egypt. The disclosure index used is designed to be suitable for companies working in the Egyptian environment.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, relapsing skin disorder which develops as a result of complex interaction of genetic, environmental and immunological factors. The skin of the patients with AD exhibits increased susceptibility to colonization and infection with microbes like S. aureus, P. oval or Candida albicans. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) represent one of the most important components of the innate immune system. Granulysin, one of the AMPs is a protein located in the granules of human natural killer (NK) cells and cytotoxic T cells. Objective. to detect the possible role of granulysin as antimicrobial peptide in atopic dermatitis. Patients and methods. This study included 20 patients with atopic dermatitis (12 males and 8 females) aged 10 -46 years and 15 healthy volunteers as controls (7 males and 8 females) aged 18 -50 years. All Patients were subjected to full history taking, clinical examination and grading of disease severity according to Rajka and Langeland (1989) using parameters of extent, course and intensity of skin lesions. 5 mm punch skin biopsies were taken from all patients and controls and assessed for granulysin level by ELISA technique. Results. The mean granulysin level in the skin biopsy specimens of AD patients was 889.18 ± 181.77 pg/dl which showed statistically significant decrease than that in healthy control subjects (1202.82 ± 292.89 pg/dl) (p = 0.001). There was a negative correlation between the level of granulysin and the severity of AD. The mean granulysin levels in the skin specimens of the patients with different grades of severity of AD was 998.43 ± 149.98, 943.3 ± 65.55 and 725.67 ± 161.18, respectively, in patients with mild, moderate and severe AD with a statistically significant difference (p = 0.001). A statistically significant difference in mean granulysin level was found between cases with positive history of bronchial asthma and those with a negative history (p = 0.005) whereas there was no statistically significant difference in mean granulysin level in skin specimens of male and female AD patients (p = 0.473) or AD patients with and without family history of atopy (p = 0.547). Finally, no correlation was found between the levels of granulysin in the skin specimens of AD patients and age (r = 0.31, p = 0.285). Conclusion. This study demonstrated deficiency in the granulysin level in the skin specimens in patients with AD with a significant negative correlation between the level of granulysin in AD patients and the clinical score of disease severity which may participate in increased liability to secondary bacterial infections especially with staphylococcus aureus with its known role in the pathogenesis of the disease. These findings make granulysin as well as other AMPs highly attractive for clinical application as a therapeutic option particularly, in face of increasing microbial resistance to the traditional antibiotics. These chemokines appear to be useful inflammatory markers for assessing severity of AD in adults. However, the same results have not been replicated in children. Therefore, we were stimulated to elucidate the expression of CCR4 ligands in children with AD and their relation to clinical disease severity. To investigate this, serum concentrations of CCR4 ligands were determined in 60 children, of whom 30 had AD and 30 were healthy matched subjects. Patients were classified into mild (n = 8), moderate (n = 12) and severe (n = 10) according to the objective scoring AD (obj-SCORAD) index. Serum concentrations of MDC and TARC were significantly increased in children with AD (2697 +/- 982.6 pg/ml and 945.5 +/- 494.7 pg/ml, respectively) compared with controls (357.2 +/- 233.2 pg/ml and 214.2 +/- 116.6 pg/ml, respectively, p &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt; 0.0001). Serum levels of both chemokines went hand in hand with disease severity as they were significantly higher in severe than moderate and in moderate than mild AD. In addition, they correlated positively with obj-SCORAD (r = 0.99 for both, p &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt; 0.0001). Furthermore, both chemokines had significant positive correlations to blood eosinophil counts and serum immunoglobulin E. In conclusion, serum CCR4 ligands may be useful inflammatory markers for assessing AD severity in children. Further studies may pave way for CCR4 ligands antagonism among the adjuvant therapeutic strategies of AD.

The performance of traditional biomarkers is not satisfactory. Osteopontin (OPN) is of potential importance. This study aim to assess the diagnostic value of plasma OPN compared with alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) for the diagnosis of HCV-related HCC. Methods: We recruited 113 HCC patients compared with 120 matched cirrhotic patients and 120 Controls. The plasma level of OPN and serum AFP for all participants were assessed. Results: The median plasma OPN level was significantly higher in the HCC group than in the cirrhotic patient group or in the normal control group (p-value < 0.001), while OPN levels were not differed significantly in correlation with the degree of liver function deterioration in terms of advanced Child-Pugh class (p-value < 0.9). The diagnostic efficacy of OPN were superior to AFP in terms of AUC, sensitivity, specificity, PPV and NPV either in diagnosis of early or late stages of HCC (0.88 vs. 0.56; P = 0.0001, 0.991vs. 0.899; p = 0.01; respectively). Conclusion: Plasma OPN level is a potential diagnostic marker for HCC, especially among high-risk group of patients. These values extend beyond the traditional tumor biomarkers as AFP, as it possesses good prognostic value.
