The present study is undertaken to analyse the conditions and the growth of traffic noise levels ... more The present study is undertaken to analyse the conditions and the growth of traffic noise levels in Kolkata city during 2007 to 2014.Based on the guidelines of the West Bengal Pollution Control Board,twenty four busy traffic junctions are selected for the survey to access the exact noise pollution levels of the city.Primary data were collected both in busy and non-busy hours in the daytime during the survey period. To analysis a more aureate picture of the noise conditions, entire city has been divided into three parts i.e. northern, central and southern. On the basis of traffic noise levels on the selected survey sites of the city, some noise hot spot zones are again been prepared. The findings reveal the facts that Ultadanga survey site at northern part, Howrah Bridge Approach at central part and Behala 14no. Bus stand crossing at southern part are the nosiest spots during the entire time span. Finally, on the basis of average noise conditions, some noise risk zones are identified as the major future concern for city dwellers as well as authority.

The growing menace of noise pollution is one of the crucial environmental issues in modern era ... more The growing menace of noise pollution is one of the crucial environmental issues in modern era across the world. This is a silent killer of the physical as well as psychological health of human being. The existing findings in Indian context show that Kolkata is amongst the polluted city primarily because of high population base and growing surface transportation system. In the light of this, the present study addresses the main source of noise pollution viz. traffic noise pollution and its likely impact upon the occupationally exposed public auto drivers who spends more than eight hours on few selected busy traffic sites of the city. The study uses the primary data for the period 2011 to 2013 which includes busiest road intersection as well as auto depots from different parts of the city. The finding reveals that the year 2013 is the noisiest year and this also reported the highest numbers of auditory disorders on auto-drivers heath. Apart from this, during this year highest numbers of irritation and low tolerance level cases have also been registered on auto-drivers heath. Amongst all the survey sites, Ultadanga site from northern parts, Howrah Bridge Approach site from Central parts and Behala 14 no. bus stand site from southern parts have been considered as highest noisy sites in the city where highest numbers of health disordered have also been registered throughout the entire study period.

finding shows that Ultadanga crossing from north-eastern parts, Shyambazar-V point crossing from northern parts
and Behala- Chowrasta crossing from southern parts is more polluted traffic points in comparison to other locations
of the city. These intersections have also recorded more cases of air borne diseases compared to other locations. The
study broadly observes six major health disorders caused by air pollution in the survey period 2012 and 2013.
