Although such discussions are useful, in this paper they are of secondary importance to the question of what the aims are, the methodological weaknesses and, more fundamentally, the epistemological assumptions of the current way history is being taught and learned in Greek-Cypriot schools of Cyprus. As this paper shows, one of the most important problems of teaching and learning history today in Cyprus is the understanding of history teaching by many educators as a mere transmission of beliefs and the presentation of the past as heritage. Not only this state of affairs does not promote historical understanding, but it hinders reconciliation cementing division. We conclude with a call for urgent educational reform in the epistemology, aim...

In the first approach, a moratorium is imposed and any reference to the conflictual past is avoided; the second is a selective approach where nation-states or groups keep silent about aspects that involve wrongdoing of one’s own group, here called “ingroup”, and offer either a positive presentation of the “ingroup” or a preservation of the memory of the conflict by reiterating master narratives of one-sided victimisation of the “ingroup”. Both of these approaches are highly problematic as they become an obstacle to conflict transformation by peaceful means and the cultivation of historical thinking. A third approach attempts to overcome conflict by a simplistic understanding of a single peaceful narrative of co-existence, which often follows outdated and unhistorical conceptions of essentialist iden...

It could be argued that oral history stands in a privileged position to engage all these issues at once owing to its particular stance at the interface of the individual and society in the nexus of past, present and future. This is exactly the focus adopted by one of the most prominent perspectives on European social psychology that of Social Representations Theory (henceforth SRT) proposed in the early 60s by Serge Moscovici (Moscovici, 1961/2008)...

It has been prepared within the framework of teacher training activities conducted by the Council of Europe in Cyprus in co-operation with the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research, a unique non-governmental body which brings together history educators
from all Cypriot communities, and with the strong support of teacher trade unions from all parts of Cyprus. Although the Council of Europe is well known as a European intergovernmental organisation, it has always placed great importance on its work with civil society. We value highly the input of all citizens, particularly with regard to such issues as strengthening social cohesion and encouraging a peaceful process of co-operation.

The Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders, along with the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR), an intercommunal grassroots initiative, inaugurated the Home for Cooperation (H4C) as an ‘infrastructure of historical refl ection’ intended to turn a ‘dead zone into a zone of cooperation’. The building’s inauguration was uch more than a celebration of political ‘neutrality’ at a site of ivision: it was an initiative that resulted from the states of exception that constitute Cyprus and the spatial practices of Cypriots who seek to overcome the legacies of a violent and costly ‘intractable confl ict’ through disciplined historical understanding. AHDR and the establishment of H4C offer a model for scholars and activists in other divided contexts, which may be used in at least three ways: by challenging states of exception, by dismantling division through transformative knowledge, and by creating safe spaces of encounter. One of the most important and concrete examples of the way AHDR and H4C move from this theoretical model to practice is the development of educational publications for educators and young people across the existing divide via the 'Multiperspectivity and Intercultural Dialogue in Education' (MIDE) project. This paper details the challenges and lessons learned from this undertaking. The journey has shown that
the processes of working together to develop disciplinary ways of teaching difficult histories are as important as the published product.

often find it difficult to deal with the conflictual past
as it is considered a sensitive or controversial topic3,
our aim with the present recommendations is to
contribute to the enhancement of the capacity of
educators to successfully overcome this obstacle.
More particularly, we propose a powerful set of
suggestions for teaching practices that follow inquiry-based
constructivist approaches in history education.
