Two initial field seasons have concentrated on the modern village of Shutb, 5 km south of Asyut, which is believed to perch on top of the remains of ancient Shashotep. Documentation of (part of) the tell and an augering survey in its immediate surroundings confirm the presence of ancient remains underneath the modern village. Engagement with the most recent layers of history includes the documentation of Shutb’s outstanding vernacular architecture and capacity building and awareness sessions with local stakeholders.

The geology is fundamental to the topography of the area: the formation of the rocks and their uplift and erosion to form the deep valleys of the Theban massif in which the necropolis was hidden. The geology is also the source of some of the practical difficulties experienced by tomb builders as well as those encountered by archaeologists and conservators of today.

We show that as the landscapes of deltas and lower alluvial plains adjusted to this decrease in the rate of relative sea-level rise, the abundance and location of resources available for human exploitation changed as did the network of waterways. This dynamic environmental evolution contributed to archaeological changes in the three fluviodeltaic settings considered herein: Egypt, Mesopotamia and the Huang He in China. Specifically, an increase in the scale and intensity of agricultural practice, and the focussing of power towards a single city can be interpreted as responses to these environmental changes. Other archaeological observations, and the cultural trajectories leading to the formation of the Primary States also need to be considered in light of these evolving landscapes.

Many cones form closely spaced, genetically related groups of up to 5 cones. One such group
