This may be why most reading strategies focus on text-based processing as opposed to visualizing while reading (De Koning & van der Schoot, 2013). Even though it may be difficult to teach, studies show the ability to visualize while reading outweighs the effort needed to teach it. Visualization-the ability to create pictures in the brain based upon written or spoken words-is one of many strategies to aid in comprehension. Gambrell and Bales (1986) expand this definition to include the ability to organize and store new mental images to form or draw conclusions from later. Despite the fact students are consistently surrounded by visual images in movies, television, video games, computers, and cell phones, most are passive consumers, which does not necessarily translate into the development of visualizing while reading (Gorman & Eastman, 2010; Hibbin & Rankin-Erickson, 2003).

To better support marginalized groups, we must learn more about them and their needs. Despite more than four million military-connected children in the U.S. and the understanding that they are a vital source of support for fighting forces, little is known about how military-connected adolescents define themselves or perceive their experiences as a member of the military culture. Using narrative inquiry, nine military-connected adolescents shared their insights, experiences, and thoughts on their identity development as it intersects growing up among the military culture. What emerged in the attempt to reveal the invisible lives of these military-connected adolescents is a perception of themselves as confident, empathetic, mature, and adaptable, which can help enlighten teachers and educational institutions to better inform teaching and learning among members of this invisible minority.

Identity development is important for adolescents, but LGBTQ students often see the ability to freely share their identity limited in public education. Providing a gay-straight alliance (GSA) club within the school has been shown to increase feeling of acceptance and well-being for LGBTQ students. This article looks at the history of GSA in education, the positive and negative outcomes of LGBTQ inclusion and the author's personal reflection of successes and challenges as a sponsor for a GSA club during its inception year.

Facing this fear through a curricular focus on death can help to combat this behavior. This can be accomplished through novel studies of books that include an honest discussion of death as a part of life and writing activities like composing self-obituaries. When used correctly, the subject of death can help students to develop goal-setting habits, better understand themselves and learn how to focus on the life that lies before them.

Many students may contribute their attitude to having contempt for school, their teachers, or both. In this article, using a recent novel study of Tuesdays with Morrie, I seek to show that creating a safe classroom environment where both the educator and students are emotionally honest with themselves and one another is the best way for teachers to overcome these issues in their classrooms. I also offer four ways in which I have been able to create an environment where trust is established and student engagement is evident by modeling desired behavior, using humor as a motivator, holding myself accountable as a role model, and confronting my own shortfalls as an educator.
