Where have you been? (original) (raw)

So...my partner and I are coming from NYC and wanted to camp at San Miguel Island, the website said we had to book transportation with island packers boats before booking the campsite, we did that, and then when we went to book the campsite they were all full.

The national park service doesn't quite see the flaw here in that the boat company is booking more people than there are campsites for....anyway... that's not the point---

Is there anyone camping on San Miguel on here from 7/31-8/3? We need space for 2 people and all of the San Miguel sites accomodate 4 people.

Thanks!

Some friends invited my husband and I to California Cavern in early October and I was put in charge of finding a campground.

I went straight for Calaveras Big Trees State Park, but they're all booked up for the weekend in question.

Any other ideas? I'm leaning towards Glory Hole Rec Area (giggle), but I thought I'd see if anyone else has camped in that area before and has rec's.

When I started camping, I got frustrated with the lack of a consolidated place online to read campground reviews, see photos, etc.

So I started: CampingReview.net

Please spread the word to any of your friends who like camping! I want to get a lot of reviews and photos up to help new campers. :)

Maybe I shouldn't share my little secret....:D

When you're looking for places to camp this summer, don't forget about regional parks! A friend and I decided yesterday to go camping this coming Saturday and all of the local state parks are full, but there were many many sites available in almost all of the local county/regional parks.

East Bay Regional Parks

San Mateo County Parks

Santa Clara County Parks

Just wanted to say "Hi" and thanks for starting this com. It's always nice to have another source for camping in CA.
Little about me:
My name is Lani, I'm married, 2 kids, a dog, and we live in OC. We have a pop-up camper, because I'm just too old for tent camping anymore. I put in my time "roughing it" and now I like my water and electricity (and heater in the fall/winter) not to mention comfy beds. One of our favorite campgrounds is Camp Edison at Shaver Lake, east of Fresno. It's a huge campground, but the sites are large and some of the areas are pretty private, plus they have the nicest bathrooms I've found anywhere! We have reservations there for the end of August.

It's hard to find nice local place for weekend trips, so we don't get out as much as we'd like. I hate that you have to make reservations everywhere. I remember when you could just call up a few days before and get in. Anyways....
Nice to meet ya. =)

Last month we spent 5 days on the Lower Kern River, near Lake Isabella. Weather was decent & not too hot. We explored a few dirt roads with Ron's new FJ Cruiser, the boys went on a geo-cache hike (& found a box of junk); We all soaked in the nearby hot spring several times, and fished the river from our camp site at HOBO CAMPGROUND. Made a day trip to the Upper Kern, above Kernville CA, plus spent time at the RIVER FEST (kayakers everywhere) at River Park. Eeven dined at the Italian restaurant in town.

This coming weekend for Memorial Day we are headed to Mountain Home State Forest, a little known Sequoia Park just outside of Springville CA.

Boyfriend and I just returned from a 4 day, 3 night camping adventure in Yosemite.

( AdventureCollapse )

We did a lot of hiking, saw at least 2 major waterfalls a day. We started really early in the morning. Someone on the Camping LJ was planning on staying at Hodgdon Meadows. A piece of advice: Wake up EARLY (5:30am) or earlier and make breakfast and head out of camp and hit the major waterfalls Brideveil and Lower Yosemite Falls first. We did each on a different day, first thing, and we had them practically to ourselves, they are very crowded in the middle of the day, as they are wheelchair accessible, which means EVERYONE goes to see them.

Wow, looks like I did a LJ search for "california camping" at the right time! :)

I'm Carolyn and I'm pretty new to camping. My husband and I took a week-long dirtbike trip in Australia and did a lot of bush camping, which got me interested in doing it at home, too.

I've since gone camping a few times locally (SF Bay Area) and am ramping up to camp my way across the country on a six-week motorcycle trip this summer.

My favorite Bay Area campground so far is Del Valle Regional Park just outside of Livermore. I stayed at campsite #41, right by the stream, and loved it.

Looks like this should be a fun community! :)
