Caz, Caz, and More Caz (original) (raw)

Hello fellow Cazians!

How's it going? I hope you're all doing well and having a lovely final day of February. March is just around the corner, so that means the best holiday of the year is, too! Yay!

Anywho, I'm signed up as the musical person for Caz Confirmation Camp [meaning I get to play guitar for all the usual guitar-y songs]. Kelly Nickel and Meredith are in putting it together, and I really want to do the best I can do to make this a really fun experience for all the kids, but especially those who have never been to camp before, since we want to get our hooks in them so they keep coming back!

I've got a list of some songs that could be played over the weekend, but if you could message me with any of our favorites that you don't see, that'd be fantastic!

Thank you so much!

~Patrick
P.S. If you absolutely hated a song you see on the list, please tell me that, too!

Hey fellow Caz-goers!!

I'm sure all of you have heard about Brian Wetzel's show "Side by Side: A Journey With Depression" by now. Well on the offchance that there's some other Caz-ers besides Nate Kaufman, Mike Osborn and myself who go to school in the LA area, I just wanted to post that his show will be coming to Loyola Marymount University in West LA (just south of Santa Monica) on Sunday October 9 and Monday October 10, both shows at 8pm.

For more info on the show visit Brian and Lizann Bassham's website at www.frontporchspirit.com and for directions to LMU or anything of that sort, leave me a comment or email me at cstudebaker@gmail.com

Hope there's some more cool Caz kids in LA that we don't know about, and hope to see you at the show!

On Saturday April 16th staff placement for Summer Camp will be decided. We have about 30 applicants for about 55 postions.

We need more people to sign up in next few days. If you know of someone that would be a good counselor, please encourage them to apply. They do not have to have camp experience, but need to have interest in working with young people.

We need your help-

Blessing on this beautiful spring Sunday.

A message from our Conference minister, the Rev. Mary Susan Gast:

I know that many of you have been expressing your reactions to NBC's and CBS' refusal to air the first of the "God is Still Speaking" ads. I know that many of you have been expressing your reactions to NBC's and CBS's refusals to air the first of the "God is Still Speaking" ads. I am currently at a meeting of the Council of Conference Ministers, and am taking a moment to let you know what I have learned here.

  1. The Stillspeaking Campaign is still launching today! It is important to keep our eyes on the prize that we have begun the biggest evangelism and identity program the UCC has ever undertaken. The original design was for 75% of the ads to air on cable stations and 25% to air on network. With the networks refusal, more ads are now being purchased on cable stations in order to accomplish our goal that 60% of the television viewing audience will see our ad at least 3 times this month. The campaign will not be silenced. God is Still Speaking!

  2. A Coordinated and Vigorous Response to the Networks is underway. You would be proud to know that our national staff are working around the clock to both launch this campaign and to launch a publicity and advocacy campaign about the networks refusal at the same time. Rev. John Thomas will most likely appear on CNN this evening (Wednesday) at 7 pm PST to speak about this decision. Support is pouring in from our ecumenical and interfaith partners. News is going out to major news outlets and ironically may result in more news for this campaign then we could have purchased! We are now setting up a Conference Ministers' Press Conference for tomorrow morning (Thursday) and hope that it will get some airtime as well.

  3. You certainly can personally complain to NBC and CBS as you wish. Our best suggestion is that you look up the telephone number for your local NBC and CBS television stations. Look in your TV guide for the names of those local stations. You can call them and express your disappointment that their network will not allow this commercial to be aired. You can tell them to look at it for themselves at http://www.ucc.org. You can tell them that you feel that their network is interfering with freedom of expression and the exercise of religion. You can stress that this ad is not a referendum on gay marriage but an invitation to anyone who is anywhere on life's journey to come attend your church and to find there the kind of welcome that Jesus taught. You can tell them how much you want to see this ad aired on that local TV station. In addition to calling your local affiliate you can also call the viewer complaint lines at NBC at 212-664-2333 and CBS at 212-975-1008.

  4. Check the Conference website http://www.ncncucc.org for the press releases and links to the national God is Still Speaking campaign. Check http://www.ucc.org/news/u113004a.htm for talking points on this issue. Keep checking on www.ucc.org for more information. The website will be updated each time a new step has been taken or a new press release is sent out. Be forewarned that the website may move a little slowly. As of noon today about 1,000 people at a time were trying to get on the website. The church has bought more server space to accommodate more visitors but it still may move more slowly than usual.

Blessings to all of you!

Networks Bar Church Ads That Welcome Gays
By REUTERS

Published: December 2, 2004

Filed at 12:26 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two leading U.S. television networks angered gay rights groups on Thursday by refusing to carry an ad by a church welcoming gays to their congregations, a message the networks found too controversial.

The United Church of Christ, a Protestant denomination which has about 1.3 million members, said the 30-second commercial was aimed at making gays feel included and they were disappointed by CBS and NBC's decision to reject it. Cable networks have accepted the ad.

In the ad, heavy-set bouncers stand behind a red velvet rope line outside a church and with bells chiming in the background, hand-holding gay couples are turned away.

``Jesus didn't turn people away. Neither do we,'' is the message of the ad.

The church's director of communications, Robert Chase, said the ad grew out of a two-year effort to welcome gays.

``There are countless persons who feel alienated, rejected or excluded from the church. What we are trying to say is, you are welcome here,'' he told ABC's ``Good Morning America'' show.

Chase said he was surprised the networks had turned down the ads, which ran in six test markets last spring in predominantly Republican states and drew no complaints.

``I think that one of the things we need to be concerned about is what has changed that would cause such a stir?'' asked Chase.

Exciting news!! Elena Larssen (now actually Rev. Elena Larssen. yay!) is thinking about taking a group of young adults to Taize, France next summer to study taize. It sounds like it should be lots of fun, and while she doesn't have any details yet she is looking for interested people. E-mail her at elarssen@stanford.edu if you're interested in going, and she'll get more information out as it comes. To find out more about Taize, go to http://www.taize.fr/en. It's like camp... in France!! Yes so I am really excited and have difficulty containing it, but so it goes, so it goes.

The UCC is conducting a youth survey about worship services. Here it is:
