Moreover, with the emergence of the ‘New Woman’ concept, women became active, social and independent in the western societies during the 20th century. After the impacts of westernization and Tanzimat Reforms, in Turkish culture, similar changes in regards to gender polarity and the changing status of women were experienced. Many male authors have tended to reflect the clashes between the old values and the new modern life to criticize the changing status of women both in the western and Turkish literatures. The Turkish author, Peyami Safa and the British writer David Herbert Lawrence could be considered not only as the authors, who focused on the essentiality of the balance between men and women, but also, they were...

Analizden yola çıkarak, Huzur ve Look Back in Anger eserlerindeki iki anti-kahramanının, dünya savaşlarının yıkımından mustarip bireylerin gerçek dünyadaki tüm savaş sonrası bunalımlarını hatırladığı ve yansıttığı sonucuna varmak doğru olacaktır.

As explained by Sigmund Freud (1962a), the struggle between the id (instincts) and the superego (society/environment) leads to conflicts for the ego (self) in actual life. In order to protect the ego from the undesirable experiences caused by the id, individuals tend to use 'defence mechanisms'. Defence mechanisms were first posited by Freud and strengthened by his daughter, Anna Freud in The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defence (1936). In actual life, individuals consult defence mechanisms to avoid anxiety, sorrow and frustration. Therefore, they could both obey the societal expectations and protect their egos from undesired feelings. Similar to individuals in real world, in fiction, authors protect their characters from harsh situations via certain defence mechanisms. Through these devices, readers could understand and interpret the clashes in narration. This comparative study aims to analyse the defence mechanisms used by two literary female figures from different cultures: Raziye in Ahmet Mithat Efendi's Yeryüzünde bir Melek (1878) and Catherine in Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights (1847). The analysis examines and exemplifies how and why Raziye and Catherine use "denial" and "projection" as defence mechanisms. The study concludes that both female protagonists consult defence mechanisms for two reasons: to protect themselves in patriarchal societies and to avoid undesirable feelings of guilt, shame and sorrow.

Throughout spatial narration, we observed the traces of Cengiz Dağcı in a silhouette revealing his own personality and experience in actual life. The author's psychology, outbursts, rebels, traumas and feelings are reflected through the main character, Joseph Tucknell. The deviations in narration highlights the scenes that create pathos for the readers when language becomes poetic. This study involves three main parts. Secondly, the focus was on the narrative techniques and cohesion within the context of the text. Finally, it was concluded that Cengiz Dağcı applied essential techniques to abstract his ideas from his fiction in this notable novel, distinguished from his previous works. Therefore, his works still mark the literary canon in terms of unique style and themes.

His stories are based on the clash and balance between Male and Female, reflected through the "Lawrentian Dualism". Based on a love and hate triangle, D. H. Lawrence"s short story "Two Blue Birds" comprises the clash between the opposing forces and the shifting balance between three main characters: a husband, a wife and the husband"s secretary. When analysed stylistically, it is evident that Lawrentian Dualism in the story is achieved via syntactic structure and the use of distinctive lexical repetitions. This study aims at depicting a stylistic analysis based on the study of syntactic structure and lexical repetitions in Lawrence"s short story, "Two Blue Birds" to conclude how the writer prefers certain stylistic markers to convey his messages to his readers.

From the beginning of the history of humanity, motherhood has been considered as the most sacred ... more From the beginning of the history of humanity, motherhood has been considered as the most sacred and constant attribute in many cultures. During periods, although women's roles and responsibilities have changed due to the social, politic and economic events, the main responsibility of a woman has always been accepted as ''motherhood''. With the modern era, as women participated in social spheres, mothering has been shaped in terms of expectations and prejudices. Motherhood has evolved through ages, yet, the expected notions of mothers mirror and recall similar attributes in almost all cultures: patience, self-sacrifice, compassion, charity and unconditional love towards children. There are various conducted studies based on the concept of ''motherhood'' in psychology, anthropology and literature. However, for this study, in order to exemplify the concept of ''motherhood'' defined by Adrienne Rich in her work Of Woman Born (1976), certain mother figures from the literary texts of world literature were chosen and comparatively analyzed. The aim of this study was not to generalize the concept of "motherhood" for every culture in world literature, yet, based on the findings of the analysis, it was observed that the perception of ''motherhood'' has been reflected in similar ways in many literary works of different cultures. Therefore, this study is exemplarily for further comparative literary studies based on motherhood and mothering in world literatures.

Research paper thumbnail of Angels or Demons: A Comparative Analysis of Motherhood Concept in World Literature

Akademik Dil ve Edebiyat Dergisi
