On May 11, 2020, supercomputers all across Europe were hacked to mine, Monero. Cado security on May 16 released a report suggesting that the attackers were using credentials from three compromised networks, two of the systems were operating from China and one from Poland. Archer, a supercomputer service in the United Kingdom, was the first to report such exploitation. Shortly after, all the supercomputers were temporarily shut down. Cyber-crimes relating to cryptocurrencies are becoming very common. Chris Doman, the Co-founder of Cado security, told ZDNet that once the attackers gained access to the nodes of the supercomputer, they appear to have used an exploit for the CVE-2019-15666 vulnerability to gain root access and then deployed an application that mined the Monero (XMR) cryptocurrency.
