This article looks at what has been involved in the development of drama and theatre practice in pre-school and primary education in Greece since the 1980s up to the present. The aim of this article is to argue that the hard work of previous years has created advanced circumstances for further development in the provision of theatre education in Greece. The author makes references to a series of contributing factors to the current status of Greek drama and theatre in education. She discusses the introduction of Theatre Education as a 'subject' in the Hellenic National Curriculum, the Greek bibliography, the provision of drama teacher training, the implementation of the 'Melina Programme: Education and Culture', and the contribution of one of its projects called the Odyssebah theatre programme to the growth of interest in theatre as an art form in education. After briefly describing the Odyssebah programme, reference is made to what could be gained from this experience for future use, related to the need for promoting the role of theatre in the education of young people in Greece. In the final section of this article, she presents an agenda of subjects about the future of Theatre Education in Greece for further consideration.

It examines the possibilities and problems inherent in this potential given the current circumstances in theatre, education and the wider social context of contemporary Greece. Original data was gathered using survey questionnaires, interviews and through observation of Greek children's theatre productions and British TiE programmes. This research study extracts lessons from the British experience towards the introduction of Hellenic TiE by overviewing the political factors that affected the British TiE medium in its short history. It investigates how Theatre Education is practiced in Greek schools; if the current children's theatre practice in Greece is developing aspects of TiE; how these aspects could develop into something closer to TiE; and how Hell...

Inspired by writings on philosophy and illness, I examine the role of the applied theatre practitioner (ATP) in healthcare in relation to illness. By viewing illness from a philosophical perspective, and examining illness as a distinctive psychological (emotional) context that puts demands on the art form, I aim to understand better the artist and their relationship with the patient/audience.

A mixed qualitative approach was used. Data were analysed using thematic analysis to explore the teachers’ views on children’s engagement with learning and the improvement of the hospital experience as a whole through applied theatre. The article presents examples of children’s stories that illustrate the findings. The study concludes that applied theatre in paediatrics can engage children with hospital tuition and learning during treatment; improve the management of emotions; help them relax and communicate with the outside world.

It focuses on findings from video recordings made on the theme ‘Dreams and Nightmares’. Konstantin Stanislavski’s method of ‘magic if’ for actors and the Neuro-Linguistic Programming method of Bandler and Grinder for visualising images from our inner world were encountered. The use of drama video recording as a ‘raw footage’ data-collection method is discussed, along with the implications of drama as a resource to improve verbal expression and negotiation.

An exploration of narratives and diagnostic criteria from psychiatric case studies led to the creation of two dramatic monologues focusing on awareness and impact of bipolar disorder on intimate personal relationships, particularly on the evolving transactional roles between the partner/caregiver and partner/patient. The paper argues that devised performance based on themes and characters that emerge from within the field of psychiatry may be used to address perceptions of mental illness and stigma for general community audiences. It concludes that psychiatrically informed material can be successfully translated into original dramatic performances to address current educational and social issues and raise social awareness in thought-provoking and stimulating ways to members of the public.
