The fast and successful recovery of some particular regions strikes the eye and raises the question of what is behind this success. The economic crisis and recovery are at the core of all recent policy initiatives that set the framework for territorial development and cohesion policy. The objective of this project is to expose territorial evidence that supports policymakers at different administrative levels in making the economic structure(s) in Europe and its countries, regions and cities more resilient to economic crises and a sudden economic downturn

While supporting foundational sectors may contribute to inclusive and sustainable growth, we question whether digitalisation can enable these aims. Through a case study of Wales, we point to the differences in digital capability of foundational and non-foundational businesses in urban and rural parts of the region. We show that while investment in digital infrastructure and digital technology use may support the foundational economy, digital barriers risk countering the benefits of its sectors’ embeddedness and exacerbating spatial divides.

This programme of support – The Superfast Broadband Business Exploitation (SBBE) programme - went live in January 2016 for a period of five years. Cardiff Business School is providing a research and intelligence function surrounding the programme of business support. The first substantive output from the research and intelligence function was to provide a report on the methods to be followed in developing a Digital Dashboard for Wales and a resulting economic impact assessment showing how SMEs have benefited from services levered by superfast broadband (WERU, 2016). This report then provides details of WERU’s first annual Digital Maturity Survey (2016). ...

Due to this multitude of factors, ‘green jobs’ focusing on renewable energy development have been identified by policy-makers as a way of transitioning economic systems in the post-recession society. Using qualitative research gathered during the KIMERAA project, from 2010–2011, this paper will discuss the regional conditions needed for this sustainable transition. The south west Wales region is the case study location due to its prominent non-renewable energy industry of liquefied natural gas, and its emerging marine energy industry, particularly wave and tidal energy. In this context, the impact of this transition in renewable energy policy will also feature, evaluating limitations it may pose in the case of Wales. This policy will be contrasted with other renewable energy development policies foun...
