Proceedings of SPIE, Apr 6, 2000

Unfortunately the process of databases integration can be accompanied by many various difficulties and problems. One of them is surely the possible occurrence of the inconsistencies appearing in this process of the integration. As we will see these inconsistencies can occur at various levels and they can be of different types. At the next stage some users go even further and try to get more from the accumulated data through data mining techniques. A data warehouse can be considered as a suitable technology for this purpose. Having in mind the data mining view of a data warehouse, one needs to know the sources of possible inconsistencies when building such a data warehouse in order to eliminate them as much as possible. In the paper we will define several existence conditions under which can occur different types of the inconsistencies in a warehouse and we will propose a classification of these inconsistencies based on the their sources. We will also propose a methodology and a procedure both of which aim at the elimination of these inconsistencies.

In this paper, we propose the notion of local safety of an ontology and we identify scenarios in which this notion may be useful in guiding the development of an ontology that is to import other ontologies safely.

Naturally one may try to get the overall complex information as a result of integrating data from these different databases. And, also naturally, one is immediately facing the problems of the inconsistency (in the sense of the classical logic), which are amplified if one admit the temporal dimension (leading to the temporal logic) and the uncertainty (leading, for instance, to the fuzzy logic or the possibilistic logic).

Knowledge, on the other hand, may be very narrowly connected with a person, who may leave a company. Such situation can be avoided by using of ontology as a tool of knowledge engineering or in general as a tool for knowledge representation. The paper presents on ontology design to peculiarities of humin substances based on analysis of existing similar type ontologies. It enables to preserve, make accessible and reuse gained experiences, for instance for design of functionally rich, flexible and easy integrable systems and applications. In introduction this work presents an overview of selected formalisms for interception of data structure and processes in humin substances area with respect to using ontologies and their possibilities. The paper is especially a case study of ontology application for evidence and data organization of humin substances, their measurement and experimentations, where use of ontologies is not yet common. It shows a potential of ontologies and illustrates parameters of generally applicable model for such area.

The remarkable advances made in computer and communication hardware/software system technologies ... more The remarkable advances made in computer and communication hardware/software system technologies have made it possible for us to use multimedia data for many purposes in various service areas. Considering the importance of developing an advanced processing environment for the acquisition, management, retrieval, creation, and utilization of large amounts of multimedia content, the “Advanced Multimedia Content Processing (AMCP)” research project has been started in Japan, focussing on the management of the continuous and semistructured features of multimedia content. In this paper, we will present a part of research results achieved by this project, along with the process from the first time the multimedia content is acquired/organized until it is delivered to and presented at the client side.
