This arrangement was found to be a straightforward solution for homogeneous as well as heterogeneous photochemical experiments that need to be carried out at higher temperatures. Here, we report the emission characteristics (250-600 nm) of EDL as a function of temperature, MW output power of the reactor, EDL envelope material, and properties of solvents used in photochemical reactions. Relative intensities of the individual emission peaks were found to be largely dependent on temperature (in the region of 35-174 • C): the short-wavelength bands (particularly the 254 nm peak) were suppressed with increasing temperature. Solvents absorbing MW significantly reduced the EDL emission intensity. It is concluded that the right choice of EDL envelope material and reaction conditions is essential for an efficient course of a photochemical process in this experimental arrangement.

Its reactivity was thoroughly investigated and a library of 17 different carbon, boron, nitrogen, phosphorus, oxygen and sulfur substituted derivatives was prepared. The racemization barrier for 2-bromo[6]helicene was determined and the usage of enantiomers in the synthesis of optically pure helicenes was rationalized. The three most energy-demanding reactions using enantiomerically pure 2-bromo[6]helicene were tested in order to confirm the predicted enantiomeric excess.

Here we focused on the electrochemistry of carbo[n]helicenes (n=5,6,7). The cyclic voltammograms of racemic mixtures of target compounds in acetonitrile/0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate at a glassy carbon electrode reveal the diffusion-controlled reactions in both anodic and cathodic potential regions. Electrochemical behaviors are different for individual helicenes, [7]helicene undergoes redox transformation easily in comparison to the other investigated compounds, which is in agreement with DFT (density functional theory) calculations. Generally, the multicomponent anodic process of helicenes is observable at potentials from +1.5 to +2.5 V, leading to the formation of deposited structures (layers) on the electrode surface. The helicenes were electrodeposited onto transparent indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes and characterized by atomic force microscopy, UV/Vis, Raman spectroscopy and ellipsometry. Finally, the anodic deposition of P and M enantiomers of [6]helicene was performed using ITO substrates, resulting in the formation of enantiopure layers of nanometer thicknesses, as confirmed by circular dichroism spectroscopy. The discovered electrosynthetic procedure opens up a new possibility for the immobilization of chiral helicene layers onto solid supports.

Further, applying quantum mechanical DFT calculations, the most probable structure of the [Tl(C 26 H 16)] þ complex was derived. In the resulting complex, the "central" cation Tl þ is bound by six bonds to six carbon atoms from the two terminal benzene rings of the parent [6]helicene ligand via cation-p interaction. Finally, the interaction energy, E(int), of the considered cation-p complex [Tl(C 26 H 16)] þ was found to be À144.8 kJ/mol, confirming the formation of this cationic complex species as well.
