In this paper I ask whether people who consider themselves to be spiritual are more likely to report higher subjective life satisfaction in times of an economic crisis than those who are less spiritual. Using data from European Social Survey (Rounds 1-8), I find that on an average people who are more spiritual have a higher life satisfaction in times of crisis than people who report lower level of spirituality.

It is then plausible to use this parameter in a historical context and look at the evolution of the health care policies. In this paper, we compare the health care policies of the colonial government and the governments post-independence. We believe that the policies evolve over time and are affected by some prior decision making - active as well as passive. This is essentially the argument of path dependency.

Since its inception in 2008 in San Francisco, Airbnb has expanded to thousands of cities worldwide and has been greeted with regulations in Berlin, New York, London and many other cities. Experiencing simultaneously an insatiable appetite for tourist accommodation and growing unhappiness among locals, the city of Barcelona has introduced a host of regulations to mitigate the negative impacts of P2P home-sharing in the face of growing tourism. Our study utilizes data collected from Idealista to find a strong positive relationship between the 2011 regulation limiting the number of tourist housing licenses and the average rent in the district of Ciutat Vella.

The very beginning of this 'new era' in the subcontinent left millions dead due to violent communal clashes which broke out as a response to the partition of the subcontinent. Since then, time and again the issue of communal clashes haunts the memory of our history. My aim in this paper is to study the methods employed for controlling riots. My main focus will be on the strength of armed personnel (civil Police) in trying to control or prevent the spread of violence. Essentially, I ask whether increasing the number of police personnel affects the instances of riots and the number of people killed due to it. So far I have not been able to establish a relationship between the two. In my analysis, I have used the Varshney-Wilkinson dataset on Hindu-Muslim riots and merged it with the Census data from 1961 to 1995. The coefficients of our estimates were insignificant.

We look at the memory associated with these events and the politics surrounding their remembrance.

But a closer study at this century will demonstrate the inefficacy of this theme in understanding the events that took place in this century. It is true that the Mughal political power started to wane by the start of the century and by the end of this century had practically vanished. However, this does not necessarily mean that this was a period of decline. A period of decline has negative connotations that are similar to darkness and decay. We believe that it was a period of resurgence, innovation and efflorescence. This period saw the rise of small states apart from innovations in art and architecture. New schools of paintings were developed in this period. This is essentially the 'paradox of the eighteenth century' as pointed by Bayly. We had regions of prosperity and progress alongside political turbulence and a decline in agricultural produce.
