Founded in 1988, the International AIDS Society (IAS) is the world’s largest association of HIV professionals.
Info
We convene, educate and advocate for a world in which HIV no longer presents a threat to public health and individual well-being. The IAS has been at the centre of the HIV response from the very start of the pandemic. We unite the global HIV response because progress happens when science, policy and activism come together. Today, the IAS galvanizes the scientific response, builds global solidarity and enhances human dignity for all those living with and affected by HIV. The IAS also hosts the world’s most prestigious HIV conferences: the International AIDS Conference, the IAS Conference on HIV Science and the HIV Research for Prevention Conference.

Cornelius Baker will be greatly missed, but his impact will endure. His career was defined by unwavering dedication to LGBTQ+ rights and the HIV response in the United States and beyond, making a profound contribution to advancing health initiatives. Baker served as Confidential Assistant to the Assistant Secretary for Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ National AIDS Program Office from 1989 to 1992. He was Policy Director and Deputy Executive and then Executive Director at the National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA) from 1992 to 1999. Baker served as Executive Director of the Whitman-Walker Clinic in Washington, D.C., one of the largest AIDS service organizations in the U.S., from 1999 to 2004. He then spent 10 years working as a senior adviser with the National Black Gay Men’s Advocacy Coalition. In 2015, he went on to become Chief Policy Advisor in the U.S. Department of State’s Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator and Health Diplomacy. As Special Advisor to the Office of AIDS Research and PEPFAR Liaison at the National Institutes of Health from 2018, Baker continued to inspire positive change on a global scale.
